Out of the Box Theatre Company is thrilled to present the first show of its third official season, the area premiere of Spring Awakening, the edgy rock musical adaptation of the 1892 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. The winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Spring Awakening by Grammy Award winner Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater was called “the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade” by Entertainment Weekly. Spring Awakening concerns a group of teenagers caught between their sexual urges and society's contradictory teachings as they reveal their alluringly melancholy story of self-discovery and coming-of-age anxiety. Set in repressive 19th-century Germany, these students attempt to reckon with the thrilling, complicated and confusing time of their adolescence. This haunting and provocative rock-musical is a powerful celebration of youth and rebellion in a daring fusion of morality, sexuality and rock & roll.

“Haunting and electrifying,” says The New York Times. “This brave new musical has a shivery, sensual allure unmatched by anything in the theater right now.”

Performances for Spring Awakening run Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. Tickets are available through the Center Stage Theater Box Office at (805) 963-0408 or online at www.centerstagetheater.org.

Ages: Spring Awakening contains adult themes, language, and sexual content. It is recommended for mature audiences.

Out of the Box Theatre Company is at 751 Paseo Nuevo, Santa Barbara, CA.

Out of the Box Theatre Company is a nonprofit community theatre company dedicated to bringing contemporary musicals to the Santa Barbara stage. They strive to make use of local talent, bringing together some of the top performers, musicians and designers in the Santa Barbara community in order to present entertaining, edgy, and socially relevant shows that fall outside of the common expectations of musical theatre. Led by artistic director Samantha Eve, Out of the Box Theatre Company was founded in 2009 and presented its first show, Reefer Madness: The Musical, at Center Stage Theater in April 2010. We bring "the best musical theatre you've never seen" to the Santa Barbara community, and with two shows a season, aim to bring awareness of lesser-known contemporary musicals to local audiences.
