Colburn School Announces April Events

The Colburn School continues its 2018-2019 season with an exciting array of free or low-cost performances that bring together today's greatest artists with members of the extraordinary Colburn School faculty and students in programs on campus and throughout the community.

On Thursday, April 4, percussion faculty Ted Atkatz will lead the Colburn Contemporary Ensemble in a performance of Steve Reich's Quartet for two vibraphones and two pianos. The program also features the Viano String Quartet, who will be joined by soprano Diana Newman in a performance of Jordan Nelson's Tender Buttons, a collection of settings of poetry by Gertrude Stein from her collection by the same name.

On Friday April 5, Elicia Silverstein, Colburn School alumna and rising star on the European early music scene, joins the the Colburn Baroque Ensemble, in performance with the Tesserae Baroque Ensemble for an evening of Italian baroque music, including works by Corelli, J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, and Telemann.

On Saturday, April 13, the Colburn Orchestra presents their season finale concert which features Colburn Conservatory student Alyssa Katahara performing Ginastera's lyrical harp concerto and Bruckner's "Romantic" Symphony under the baton of guest conductor Alexandr Prior.

On Sunday, April 14, the Community School's Colburn Youth Orchestra, led by Maxim Eshkenazy, will perform as part of the Sundays Live series at LACMA. This renowned performance series at one of the nation's premier arts institutions brings a variety of ensembles to that stage all year long. These free programs are streamed live at lacma.org and heard through the week as a podcast on kusc.org. The Community School of Performing Arts has participated regularly in this concert series for decades.

On Thursday, April 18, as part of Colburn School's free Gibson Dunn Rush Hour concert series, Director of Chamber Music Scott St. John will host "Spring Strings," an evening of string chamber music.

On Tuesday, April 30, the conductorless ensemble Academy Virtuosi showcases Colburn's extraordinary pre-college musicians performing beloved works for a small orchestra.
