ODC's Theater Unplugged Returns With Larry Arrington In The Spotlight

Next month, ODC Theater will present Resident Artist Larry Arrington in a work-in-progress showing for her newest project titled No Quarter. This edition of ODC's signature THEATER UNPLUGGED series, a recurring platform offering a rare and candid look into the creative process, takes place for one night only, Thursday, August 29 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, and may be purchased online at odc.dance/TheaterUnplugged or by phone at 415-863-9834.

Through the creation of multidisciplinary, layered works, Arrington examines archetypes of power as a lens through which to understand history and human evolution. For her newest project, she draws on her long study of astrology, describing No Quarter as an "astrological folk dance that investigates Eurocentric cultural tenets through a long lens of time." At the core of this ambitious work is a duet between Arrington and dancer and vocalist Cookie Harrist. At its premiere at ODC Theater next January, No Quarter will feature a chorus of additional performers.

Set to a score of bluegrass and shape-note singing, No Quarter takes particular aim at American crimes of power and aggression, from the Atlantic slave trade to the CIA's covert campaigns during the Cold War. Arrington also weaves stories of her grandfathers into the thematic arc of the piece. "No Quarter honors the past as a way to move beyond hubris, reorienting us towards new arrangements of power that can hold compassion," said Arrington.

Since 2011, Arrington has been an active member of the Bay Area's dance and performance community. She's collaborated in the creation of new works with artists including Ruairi Donovan, Keith Hennessy, Jesse Hewit, Mica Sigourney, Amara Tabor-Smith and Julie Tolentino. Among the major festivals she's taken part in are the Fusebox Festival, Hope Mohr Dance's Bridge Project, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art's TBA Festival, YBCA's Transform Festival and American Realness. As a lead artist, Arrington has toured her work outside the U.S., from Toronto to Dublin, Stockholm and Berlin.
