American Conservatory Theater's Young Conservatory will open its 2006-07 season with Horton Foote's unflinching coming-of-age drama Laura Dennis.  Directed by Craig Slaight, the play will run August 18 through 27 at the Zeum Theater, located at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Gardens (Fourth and Howard streets).  Tickets are $12-$20 and will be available after August 6 at www.act-sf.org or by calling ACT Ticket Services at 415-749-2228.

"Set during the 1930s in a deceptively sleepy Texas town, Laura Dennis tracks the 17-year old title character, who has been left to deal with her father's death and the mysterious absence of her mother," states press notes, "Her understanding of the situation develops through encounters with her neighbors and classmates, all of whom have secrets and hold pieces of the puzzle. Laura's is an emotional and evocative search for personal identity that is infused with hope for the future."

Thirteen young actors from across the Bay Area comprise the cast of Laura Dennis.  The ACT Young Conservatory offers a broad range of theater training for young people aged 8 to 19. The eight sessions and four public productions offered throughout the year are designed to develop talent and creativity, as well as communication and cooperation skills, for young people with all levels of theater background. Working professional actors and directors lead students in a spectrum of classes, including acting, directing, voice and speech, musical theater, audition, and improvisation. Call 415-439-2444 for applications and information.
