Ella at San Jose Rep Begins 6/23
Ella, the musical play about one of the most influential Jazz vocalists of the 20th century, comes to San Jose Rep. A theatrical event that weaves myth and memory, comedy and drama, mystery and music, Ella, will take you inside the heart and soul of Ella Fitzgerald, one of the world's most beloved jazz singers. Performances begins June 23, opening June 29, through July 22.
"The time is July, 1966. The place is a concert stage in Nice on the French Riviera. Ella Fitzgerald, 'The First Lady of Song,' rehearses for an upcoming concert to be taped for posterity," describes press notes, "Her producer requests that she add more patter about her life to the show. Gathered with her favorite musicians, Ella begins to reminisce, uncovering a past the public never knew. Starring Broadway veteran Tina Fabrique as Ella Fitzgerald and featuring 14 of her greatest hits, including: 'That Old Black Magic,' 'A Tiskit, A Tasket,' 'How High The Moon' and 'They Can't Take That Away From Me,' this critically acclaimed musical play has the entire nation falling in love with Ella all over again."
Ella Fitzgerald was the female voice of the American
Songbook, and she still holds the title of the most popular female jazz singer
in the United States. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and
sold over 40 million albums.
Ella was conceived by Rob Ruggiero and Dyke Garrison, and also directed by Rob Ruggiero, from the book by Jeffrey Hatcher. Musical direction and arrangements were provided by Danny Holgate.
Tina Fabrique stars as Ella Fitzgerald, opposite Harold Dixon as Norman Granz. Ella's Band includes conductor/pianist George Caldwell, Rodney Harper on drums, Clifton Kellem on bass, and Brian Sledge on trumpet.
