Review: SAN DIEGO OPERA'S PRODUCTION OF RIGOLETTO at San Diego Civic Center Theater
Verdi’s score for Rigoletto is a masterpiece. I just wish knowing where Francesco Maria Piave’s libretto was headed didn’t give me this creepy feeling from foreboding overture to crushing end. Other than Rigoletto’s painfully naïve daughter Gilda, there isn’t a single character who doesn…
Review: 'CARRIE: THE MUSICAL' at Oceanside Theatre Company
Oceanside Theatre Company’s “Carrie: The Musical is a fittingly spooky-season offering, delivering psychological horror, impressive vocals, and a bloody good time.…
Review: KHACHATURIAN’S EXUBERANT VIOLIN CONCERTO at Jacobs Music Center
It was an unusual night for San Diego and its symphony orchestra. The heavy rains of hurricane Rachel were headed our way, and rather than the usual short concert opener, Music Director and Conductor Rafael Payare jumped right into the compelling urgency of Aram Khachaturian’s violin concerto. It …
Review: OH, MARY! at San Diego Civic Theatre
Tony Award-winning playwright Cole Escola’s retelling of Mary Todd Lincoln’s life has less in common with a traditional historical account and more with Gwyneth Paltrow’s rendition of the first lady in Fox’s Glee. Certain historical facts remain unavoidable, but everything in between belong…
Review: OH, MARY! at Broadway San Diego
The humor of 'Oh, Mary!' is queer and crass, dark and campy, and somehow manages to be both completely ridiculous and to make you wonder what will happen next.…
Review: OPERA À LA CARTE SAN DIEGO PERFORMS DONIZETTI at The Light Box Theater in Liberty Station
What did our critic think of OPERA À LA CARTE SAN DIEGO PERFORMS DONIZETTI at Liberty Station's Light Box Theater? Opera À la Carte San Diego’s third annual full production was the San Diego premiere of Donizetti’s operatic satire Viva la Mamma! The production was as entertaining and well-s…
Review: GOOD NIGHT, OSCAR at North Coast Repertory Theatre
'Good Night, Oscar' is full of comedy, music, celebrity, addiction, mental illness, ambition, and the uncomfortable bargain between an artist and an audience that wants to consume his genius. This production at North Coast Repertory Theatre handles it all with impressive performances and empathy.…
Review: BEGIN AGAIN at The Old Globe
'Begin Again' at the new musical The Old Globe has plenty of heart, terrific performances, and a theatrical imagination that makes making music feel almost tangible.…
Review: COME FROM AWAY at Moonlight Stage
Come From Away is a show about the ripple effect of kindness. You do not have to save the world to make a difference. Fred Rogers famously told us to “look for the helpers.” Perhaps that is why this particular musical continues to feel so welcome: In a world that can sometimes feel determin…
Review: World Premiere Musical WILD CHILD Debuts at Laguna Playhouse
Featuring book and lyrics by Dan Marshall and music by composer Julianne Wick Davis, WILD CHILD is an ambitious, sincerely earnest, and, at times, cleverly innovative new musical about a group of teenagers who are forced to join an outdoor wilderness therapy program where they must grapple with iden…
