Riot Productions is proud to present a full length production of 2026’s award winning “The Fairy Tale Monologues”, with extended scenes and additional songs by Sarah Alida LeClair, two time William Male Foundation Fellow for playwriting. A queer princess (Delia Mejia) hiding a trail of bodies, a witch (Sarah LeClair) done to death by her own empathy, a faithful wife (Josalyn Johnson/Jaime Feinstein) struggling against crippling depression and suicidal ideation, and a child trying to figure out fact from fairy tale. Also starring San Diego favorites Tim Benson and BJ Robinson, and introducing Gigi Filipovich, “The Fairy Tale Monologues” twists familiar fairy tales until they shatter, revealing the real women behind the stories as they search for love, connection, and friendship.
Audiences at San Diego Fringe called the script “a ride into another world. I laughed until I cried, and then I ended the play in tears.” “The Fairy Tale Monologues” is the perfect summer fare to leave the theatre humming the songs while asking yourself why a fairy tale always begins, “her mother was dead to begin with.”
Fellow playwright Carla Navarro says “Fairy Tale Monologues is Inventive, clever, funny, emotionally honest…Sharp, poetic, grounded modern, raw. The characters have real agency, real flaws, real heart.
[Though I’m not a lover of musical theatre] the songs deepen the emotional stakes…Great acting across the board, bringing strength and nuance to their characters.”
July 31st-August 9th at the MOXIE Theatre Venue, tickets available at https://www.tickettailor.com/events/riotproductionsinc/
'The Fairytale Monologues' possesses an interesting idea and genuine potential while championing voices too often left out. As a new musical, it may still be finding its final form, but this is a fairy tale worth telling.
Interview with Delia Mejia's about her Princess in 'The Fairy Tale Monologues,' creating a role from the ground up, challenging the classic damsel-in-distress trope, and why audiences may discover that fairy tales still have new stories left to tell.
Interview with Riot Productions' “The Fairy Tale Monologues” music director and accompanist, Christopher T. Miller, about the evolution of the score, the musical influences behind the production, and how live accompaniment becomes an active part of the storytelling.
