Arts Off Broadway is producing "Hairspray, the Broadway Musical" at the California Center for the Arts (340 N. Escondido Blvd. Escondido, California 92025). Three performances are scheduled for Friday, March 25 at 7:00 PM, Saturday, March 26 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, March 27 at 2:00 PM. For tickets call: 800 988-4253. Fabulous singers from North County, with a live orchestra, will get your feet tapping to the music of Marc Shaiman as you enjoy this story based on the New Line Cinema Film of the same name, written and directed by John Waters.

Hairspray isolates the story of a teenage girl with a dream of dancing on a local TV show. Though her appearance does not meet the standards of the aesthete station Manager Velma Von Tussle, Tracy Turnblad gets accepted by the TV show host, Corny Collins. As part of the Corny Collins Show council, Tracy decides to extend the invitation to her new friends.

"This is one of the shows that I've always wanted to do", said Allisan Whitman, Choreographer. "The songs inspire movement from the 60's but with a twist of today's dance influences."

The story derived from the events of the Buddy Deane Show. The Buddy Deane Show was a teen dance television show, similar to Philadelphia's American Bandstand, but was taken off the air because home station WJZ was unable to integrate black and white dancers.

Arts Off Broadway (AOB) is a non-profit 501 (c )(3) organization founded in 2001 as a children's musical theatre and reinvented itself as a community theatre for all ages in 2008. This is the start of their third season after 12 musical productions with a live orchestra. AOB is dedicated to provide affordable performing arts opportunities for the community.
