RDT's Link Series to Present EMERGE by Rafael Dance, 1/14
By: Tyler Peterson
Repertory Dance Theatre's Link Series presents Emerge, an evening of dance created by Rodolfo Rafael, winner of the 2015 Rocky Mountain Choreography Festival and Artistic Director of Rafael Dance. Rafael's company premiered last October to a packed house at Peery's Egyptian Theater in Ogden, which led to a one night only performance at the Rose Wagner Theater in Salt Lake City on January 14, 2016.
An instructor at Salt Lake City branch of the international Millennium Dance Complex, Rafael is comfortable with contemporary and modern dance, and effortlessly merges them in his concert. Emerge features new and more seasoned works. Rafael's men's quartet "Beware of Dogs" is a meditation on male pensiveness and territoriality, and was honored at the 2013 American College Dance Association's Northwest Region meeting. Emerge contains two solos performed by Rafael and the second performed by Josie Patterson, a former dancer for inFluxdance Company and adjunct faculty at Weber State University. Also featured is Avert, a group piece that looks into the practice and effects of homosexual conversion therapy. Rafael Dance features thirteen dancers from all over Utah and will also include a guest performance by Weber State University.
