COMPANIA MAZATLAN BELLAS ARTES DE SACRAMENTO Set for Harris Center, 6/22

Compañía Mazatlán Bellas Artes de Sacramento (CMBA) performs its new production, Costumbres Latinoamericanas, an exhilarating panorama of Latin America through its dances and rituals, at Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom.

Under the watchful eye of Artistic Director Zenón Barrón, CMBA ventures in a dancing odyssey up and down the American Continent. Audiences will be part of the ancestral rituals of the Quechua, the vibrant footwork of the Argentine gaucho and the Venezuelan joropo, accompanied by the sonorous singing of the harp.

The journey continues, exploring the continent with the melodic wood of the Nicaraguan marimba, the din of the Oaxacan Chontales drum from the Mexican Southwest, the celebration of the Saint of Esquipulas in Guatemal, and the Cali Carnival in Colombia.

On the northern dancing migration, CMBA will make the last stop in the Copper Canyon of Chihuahua to visit the Rarámuri-Tarahumara indigenous dances. Feel the life of the American Continent with the footwork and music of 40 dancers and musicians

Compañía Mazatlán Bellas Artes de Sacramento presents Costumbres Latinoamericanas on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at 3 pm. Tickets are priced at $20-$29; Premium $35. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, CA, facing East Bidwell Street.

Compañia Mazatlán Bellas Artes is one of California's most esteemed Mexican folk dance companies. A highly valued cultural and artistic resource throughout the western United States as well as in international markets, the Compañía Mazatlán Bellas Artes boasts a repertoire that includes traditional folkloric dance pieces as well as indigenous rituals that are fused with elements from contemporary movement.

Formerly known as the Instituto Mazatlán Bellas Artes, the performing arm of the IMBA changed its name to Compañía Mazatlán Bellas Artes (CMBA) in order to differentiate its training academy and other organizational activities from its professional performance group.

Zenón Barrón, Artistic Director, was born and raised in Guanajuato, Mexico where he began his training and love of dance at the age of 12. He studied dance with America Balbuena at the Universidad Autonoma de Guanajuato in 1976. He was honored with being selected to participate in the Cultural Exchange program with Casa Cultural Florencia Italia in 1980. He later became a member of the Ballet Folklorico de la Universidad de Guadalajara under the direction of Carlos Ochoa before deciding to expand his professional dance training by moving to Mexico City. Mr. Barrón attended summer classes at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1984 while a earning a degree as a Dancer, then auditioned and accepted to the world famous Ballet Folklorico de Mexico of Amalia Hernandez. He became a member of the resident company in September 1983 and later was promoted to the first company in January 1984 where he performed throughout Europe, South America and United States of America. In 1992 Mr. Barron moved to San Francisco and the same year he founded and ensemble the Ballet Folklorico of San Francisco.
