THE GETAWAY DRIVER Will Make World Premiere at Trinity Rep
The crime drama by Deborah Salem Smith and Charlie Thurston tours Providence, Cambridge, and White River Junction
Trinity Repertory Company, Central Square Theater, and Northern Stage will present the rolling world premiere of The Getaway Driver, a new crime drama by Trinity Rep Playwright-in-Residence Deborah Salem Smith and Resident Artistic Company Member Charlie Thurston. The production, developed and commissioned by Trinity Rep, will launch at Trinity Rep in Providence, RI in September 2026. It will then move to Central Square Theater in Cambridge, MA in November 2026. The run will conclude at Northern Stage in White River Junction, VT in February 2026.
Inspired by the remarkable true story of Katherine Ann Power and Clare Schroeder, The Getaway Driver is a gripping new drama that follows two women bound by a life-altering moment. In 1970, a young activist drove the getaway car for a robbery she hoped would change the world. Instead, it ended in tragedy, and she disappeared, beginning the longest run of any woman on the FBI's Most Wanted List. More than 20 years later, she's ready to tell the truth. But as she seeks redemption, another voice emerges—the daughter of the person who was killed that day. Unfolding like a true crime thriller, this world premiere traces the long shadow of a single decision.
Curt Columbus, Trinity Rep's outgoing Artistic Director, will direct the production as it tours New England, marking his next chapter as an artist.
“I have been a superfan of Deb's writing since I encountered it in my first season at Trinity Rep, and I've been equally a fan of Charlie's since I met him fifteen years ago as a Brown/Trinity Rep student,” Columbus said. “Our long artistic association is one of the aspects of this collaboration that excites me the most about this project: I get to work with two people I care deeply about, on a story that feels timely, powerful, and thrillingly local. Even better, we will get to tell a very New England story at three great New England theaters. I can't wait to share this important and exciting piece with all our audiences.” (A previous release noted that Columbus's final show in the Dowling Theater would take place this past season; however, changes to the construction timeline and the opportunity for a multi-theater artistic collaboration to cement his legacy in the region inspired this shift in the plan.)
Salem Smith and Thurston previously collaborated on the world premiere of Someone Will Remember Us, a play inspired by true stories of veterans and refugees from the Iraq War. Salem Smith also wrote multiple works under commission at Trinity Rep as its Playwright-in-Residence, including Faithful Cheaters, Love Alone, Some Things Are Private, and Boots on the Ground (with Laura Kepley).
"Whenever we tell people what the play is about, their jaws drop,” Thurston said. They can't believe it's true. I can't wait for audiences to go on this ride."
Adds Salem Smith, “Sometimes you hear a story that stays with you. You go on with your life, but you can't stop thinking about the people, because the story's both riveting and moving in the most unexpected ways.”
