Groundhog Day: The Musical at Lakewood Theatre Company

Nominated for seven 2017 Tony Awards and the winner of the prestigious Olivier Award for Best New Musical, the comedy-classic adaptation Groundhog Day: The Musical makes its Portland area debut on April 25 at Lakewood Theatre Company in Lake Oswego. The show continues through June 8, 2025.

Composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, along with screenwriter Danny Rubin, has transformed the hit 1993 film into a brand new and thoroughly original musical about Phil Connors, a sarcastic and self-centered TV weatherman from Pittsburgh who dreads his annual trips to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to report on the festivities of Groundhog Day.

Lakewood’s production of Groundhog Day: the Musical is directed by Bryce Britton. The Music Director is Alex Trull, and the Conductor is Alicia Barrett. Choreography is by Chynna Rae Shurts.

Performances are Thursday to Saturday at 7:30 PM, Sundays at 2:00 PM, one Saturday (May 24) at 2:00 PM, and two Wednesday performances (May 14 and 28) at 7:30 PM. Lakewood Theatre Company features an intimate 220-seat theatre located at the Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State Street in Lake Oswego.

The Story: Groundhog Day: The Musical tells the tale of Phil Connors (Travis Bilenski), a cynical TV weatherman from Pittsburgh. He is sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in the small, isolated town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Accompanied by his producer Rita (Madison Curtis) and cameraman Larry (Keaton Fields), Phil discovers that he is seemingly destined to relive Groundhog Day in an endless loop, unless he finds a way to break the cycle. As each day unfolds in exactly the same manner, Phil grows increasingly despondent. Yet, is there a lesson to be learned through his experiences? Will he ever unlock the secret to breaking the cycle?
