THE COURTESAN A New Play by Dmae Roberts Premieres in January
by BWW News Desk - December 19, 2016
In 2012,  Dmae Roberts visited the Van Gogh museum and saw all these Japanese prints.  She was surprised they to find the prints included in the museum. Then Roberts realized these paintings were Van Gogh's copies of Japanese wood-block prints. Many artists copied these prints including Manet, Degas and Monet. Japanese artwork really gave birth to Impressionism. She couldn't get the image of one painting, The Courtesan, out of her head. She imagined the subject of the painting talking to the artist. Then Roberts thought about global influences of art and cultures and how art can help give us hope even through devastation.

BWW Review: Portland Center Stage's IRVING BERLIN is the Must-See Show of the Month
by Krista Garver - December 15, 2016
This month, millions of people across America will gather in squares, theatres, and many other places to sing their favorite seasonal carols. At 99.99% of these gatherings, someone will strike up the tune of 'White Christmas.' Meanwhile, at sporting events across the country, just after the national anthem, many people will remain standing to participate in a rousing rendition of 'God Bless America.' Very few of these people will know that these songs -- both quintessentially American -- were written by a Russian Jewish immigrant. That immigrant, who gave us much of the Great American Songbook, was Irving Berlin.
BWW Review: A VERY MERRY PDX-MAS is That Fun, Funny Christmas Musical You've Been Looking For, at Broadway Rose
by Krista Garver - December 15, 2016
Christmas shows usually come with a moral -- some 'true message of Christmas' about generosity or acceptance that we're supposed to carry in our hearts throughout the year to come. Broadway Rose's A VERY MERRY PDX-MAS has none of that. Your heart won't grow three sizes. There isn't even an overarching story you'll spend hours or days getting to the bottom of. What you will have is a smile on your face that will help you get through what is widely recognized as the most stressful time of year.

Portland Center Stage at The Armory is using a story produced for the stage as a lens for audiences to explore a key part of U.S. history, guided by a 'Visit Astoria' travel itinerary. Consisting of three days of outlined destinations and attractions, the itinerary both educates travelers on the history surrounding Astoria, the first U.S. settlement on the West Coast, and aids in bolstering the tourism industry in Oregon. Inspired by the world premiere production of Astoria: Part One, playing at The Armory January 14 through February 12, 2017, the travel itinerary gives theater-goers and tourists alike the chance to explore the region featured in the production and gain a deeper connection with the story on stage.
