In 1942, more than 120,000 men, women, and children - the vast majority U.S. citizens - were forced to give up their homes and most of their possessions and be relocated to armed camps. Most went peacefully, believing cooperation showed them to be good citizens eager to help in the war effort. A few had other ideas of what entails good citizenship. One of them was a young Portland, Oregon, attorney and natural-born U.S. citizen named Minoru Yasui. Good Citizen uses a variety of storytelling approaches to dramatize Yasui's story as part of the greater political and personal upheaval that marked the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.
George Taylor is the winner of CoHo's second annual New Play Competition. CoHo Productions presents these stage readings of Good Citizen both as George's prize for winning the competition, but also as our contribution to the city-wide festival of new works, Fertile Ground.
