Student Blog: A Day in the Life Of A Music Student
A day in my life as a music student.
Music students have a busy schedule. Between double majors, classes, friendships, and practices, it can be crazy. Here's my day in the life of a music student, my typical Monday.
My first class is at 9 a.m. so I roll out of bed around 7:30 a.m. I do my skincare, eat some overnight oats, drink some coffee I saved, and then walk over to class. I live off-campus, but the neighborhood is so pretty I usually always try to walk.
When I make it to class it's a Film Analysis course that's four-hours long required for my Broadcasting Arts certificate. It's one of my favorite classes and we discuss the films plots and devices in-depth.
After class, I head to the gym for a quick workout and then grab lunch with some friends.
My second class of the day is Jazz Improvisation where we're studying how to improvise on our instruments. I'm currently working on scatting and reading lead sheets for piano. After various exercises and lectures, our teacher lets us improv in a mini jam session to practice quick-thinking.
After class, I rush to the bus that takes me to Carnegie Mellon's campus where I have Jazz Choir rehearsal for two hours. Everyone organizes their binder with new music for the semester, all whilst snacking on communal pop tarts that our director occasionally brings. We warm-up with some stretches, listen to our pieces, then gradually start to learn our harmonies.
By the time I'm done I take the bus to my apartment and have to cook. I usually like to make some comfort food, but I'm feeling healthy and opt for a grilled chicken breast with a side of cauliflower wings, and green beans.

Someone may not be able to do their part and you may need to step in. That is the joy and horror of live productions. This happened during my last jazz performance, one of our altos couldn’t make it to the concert and I had to learn their part. Here's my guide to making sight reading a little less scary.

As I near the end of the semester and quickly approach my last semester at Pitt, I’m reflecting on my experiences and the tools that have helped me to get through college. It certainly hasn’t been the easiest experience given the global pandemic thing, but I think it has definitely made me a better person.

Jazz Improvisation has challenged me to step out of my comfort zone. I’ve never felt incredibly comfortable scatting, but it’s something I hope to improve throughout the semester for performances and my own musical development.

Open Mic Nights are the perfect way to gain some live performance experience without too much pressure. To participate in the fun, I try to do a few songs in every set, but it takes a few steps. Here are a few ways I try to combat stage fright at an open mic.
