Kensington Students Present 'Of Mythic Proportions,' 5/27

By:

B. Someday Productions of Kensington/Fishtown, in partnership with the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative and the United Way of Southeastern PA and the City of Philadelphia, present the culmination of a semester's work with students from Mariana Bracetti Academy Charter School at two Public Performances on Thursday, May 27, 2010 from 4:00 & 6:00pm. The performances, entitled "Of Mythic Proportions" was created from the 9th-12th grade student's personal stories about growing up in Kensington and how violence has become a part of their lives. The students will perform their work at Walking Fish Theatre, 2509 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19125 for the community and the general public. In addition to the performance, there will be a short discussion raised by the topics in the stories, with a chance for the audience to interact with the performers. Following the workshop will be a reception with refreshments. The cost is free.

"Of Mythic Proportions" is the pilot project of B. Someday's Professional Partnership Program-an internship and mentoring project-- with students from the community. B. Someday also offers the Family Theatre Series on the first Saturday of every month as part of its Educational Outreach program.

"We are so fortunate to have B. Someday offer their teaching artist to our kids every week. Most of my students have never had an opportunity to perform for their families let alone their community. This is a great way to teach them about making other, positive choices that they can carry with them throughout the rest of their lives," says Kathleen Gaynor, Classroom Teacher.

This is the second year of residency for B. Someday at Mariana Bracetti Academy, at 2501 Kensington Avenue in Philadelphia. It is the high school for many students in the American Street Empowerment Zone. This area of the city is often fraught with violence, especially among its youth. B. Someday Productions along with the United Way and the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative hopes to give the youth of the community an opportunity to express themselves in a creative endeavor and share with the community alternatives to violence.
