We've lost many a theatre artist this past year, from actress Barbara Cook to playwright Sam Shepard. The Society of London Theatre, with the help of Chita Rivera, Andy Karl, and Adam Bernard, paid tribute to those who've made contributions to the world of theatre in their 'In Memoriam' segment at Sunday's Olivier Awards broadcast.
As magical as the evening was, after Freddie Gershon gave an impassioned presentation to the duo, Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones hit the stage and brought the house down at ages 88 and 89 respectively. They joined forces onstage to perform a song from their musical The Bone Room, described by Jones as being about 'the pleasures of dying and being embalmed in this great country of ours.' With a decades-spanning career and an unmatched list of accolades including Kennedy Center Honors and Tony, Grammy, and Drama Desk awards, Broadway icon Barbara Cook is beloved for her legendary performances in the premiere production of The Music Man and lauded revivals of Oklahoma! and Carousel. The first female pop singer ever to perform a solo concert at the Metropolitan Opera, the silvery soprano returned to Lincoln Center for one night only.
Anita Darian, a soprano whose four-octave voice earned her the nickname “The Armenian Yma Sumac” and spawned an eclectic 50-year career that ranged from performances with the New York City Opera, Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic to big-band jazz concerts, co-starring roles with Barbara Cook, and hit pop recordings that included “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is dead at 87. A longtime resident of East Atlantic Beach, L.I., she died Sunday, Feb. 1 at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside of complications from surgery.
