'Ladies and gentlemen, you are about to see a story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, and treachery-all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts.' So begins the classic Kander and Ebb musical, Chicago. Of course, there are some other things that we hold near and dear to our hearts, such as pitch perfect voices, showy choreography, imaginative staging, and a good rum and coke. Thankfully, all are present and accounted for in Half and Half's current production of Chicago. Whether you've seen the show or the Oscar-winning movie before, you owe it to yourself to see this uniquely immersive production.

Over the course of his fifty year career, Stephen Sondheim has written shows of a predominantly darker hue. He's tackled stories about showgirls who are past their prime, a barber turned serial killer, a giant who destroys a fairy tale kingdom, presidential assassins, and an entire country selling out to the western world. Still, his unassuming 1981 musical about the slow demise of a three-pronged friendship may be the saddest thing he's ever written. If that sounds like an indication that you should skip Merrily We Roll Along, keep in mind that no one does sad like Sondheim. In other words, roll along to St. Edwards University, see this show, and enjoy the emotional sucker punch.

When December rolls around, it's customary for theater companies to scramble around for Holiday-themed fare. As beloved as Holiday shows are, it's refreshing when companies like Different Stages mount something decidedly in opposition of the trend. With its strong and hysterically funny production of Arsenic and Old Lace, Different Stages essentially defines how to successfully pull off counter-Holiday programming in Austin.
New York's hottest composers have gotten into bed with lyricist Alex Rubin for her premiere concert, Lyric Tramp: The Songs of Alex Rubin. The concert, which will feature Alex Rubin's lyrics, paired with the music of 8 different composers, will take place on Monday, December 16, 2013 at The Laurie Beechman Theatre (407 W. 42 St, New York, NY).
Different Stages opens its 2013-2014 season with the classic comedy by Joseph Kesselring, Arsenic and Old Lace. Drama critic Mortimer Brewster must deal with his crazy, homicidal family and local police in Brooklyn as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves. His family includes two spinster aunts who have taken to relieving the loneliness of old men by inviting them in for a nice glass of homemade elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine, and just a pinch of cyanide. Add to the mix his two brothers - one who thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt, and one who is a serial killer. Toss in a police officer who thinks he's a playwright, sprinkle in a few corpses, and you have one of the most hilarious and enduring comedies in American theater. The New York Times called Arsenic and Old Lace so funny that none of us will ever forget it!
Big Vision Empty Wallet has announced the cast for the reading of Alex Rubin's 'First Love,' co-produced as the last of three plays Aaron Grant Theatrical is presenting this summer, as part of a new developmental reading series.
Anyone who's seen any of the annual Zilker summer musicals in Austin's Zilker Park know that, though the productions are free to the public, the entertainment value and quality are always top-notch. Zilker's 55th annual production, Little Shop of Horrors, does not disappoint. This is a dazzling, colorful, and hysterically funny take on a staple of musical theater. The shop may be little, but the entertainment value is gigantic.
