CABARET: Searing and Sexy Tale for our Times Now Thru July 17
by Linda Hodges
- Jul 8, 2016
San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre plays host to the provocative and still darkly daring, Cabaret now through July 17. Set in 1931 Berlin, on the cusp of all that was to come with the rise of the Nazis, the Kander and Ebb musical revolves around the Kit Kat Club and its cast of characters who are determined to ignore the outside world. 'We have no troubles here! Here, life is beautiful,' shouts the garishly made-up emcee. He and the club's performers do their best to convince us that indeed, 'life is a cabaret' and, for a moment in time, it seems to be true. Yet they set aside the warning signs at their own peril. Coming directly from Broadway and originally directed by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall, SHNSF's Cabaret is a spectacular sleight of hand, giving us sinfully sexy performances even as the real depravity lies in wait like spider outside the doors of the Kit Kat Club.

- Jul 6, 2016
A diverse cast of 30 teenage students of dance, voice and drama will present Sandy Wilson's musical spoof The Boy Friend, August 5, 6 and 7 at the Lundstrum Center for the Performing Arts in North Minneapolis. This witty play, set in the French Riviera, presents a rollicking review of courtship in the Roaring 20's, with amusing characters, mistaken identities, catchy tunes and up-beat dance numbers, including the memorable 'Won't You Charleston With Me?'

BWW Review: BLACK COMEDY at Ojai Art Center Theater
by Cary Ginell
- Feb 1, 2016
For the first ten minutes of Peter Shaffer's knockabout farce, Black Comedy, the stage is dark, as engaged Londoneers Brindsley Miller and Carol Melkett get ready to receive wealthy German art collector Georg Bamberger, who they hope will purchase Brindlsey's latest modern sculpture. But a blown fuse plunges their home into darkness, and that's when the lights on the stage finally go up. Confused? Well, the story of the anticipated sale of Brindsley's work is merely the MacGuffin in Black Comedy, something only the characters care about. What's important to the audience is the show's topsy-turvy lighting gimmick, one that gives Black Comedy its name: a riotous jumble of mistaken identities, complex blocking, and side-splitting slapstick. If everyone in the cast stays healthy, the show will run through February 14 at the Ojai Art Center Theater.
BWW Review: Six Years After Its Debut, Maxine Linehan's Stunning Petula Clark Tribute Show Retroactively Becomes One of New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits
by Billie Roe
- Nov 5, 2015
For the third installment of his New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits--a wonderful new monthly series at the Metropolitan Room celebrating award winning and critically acclaimed cabaret shows of the past--Producer Stephen Hanks (and his Cabaret Life Productions) wisely chose Maxine Linehan's What Would Petula Do? A Tribute to Petula Clark. Although this show won no awards, nor received critical acclaim in 2009 (when I first saw it at the Laurie Beechman Theatre), Linehan's revival this past Monday night of one of her first cabaret shows could certainly be considered one the best of this or any year.
