First published in the UK 75 years ago, Four Quartets is considered the crowning achievement of TS Eliot's career as a poet. Now three visionaries, Pam Tanowitz, Kaija Saariaho and Brice Marden respond to the four-part poem in a ravishing union of dance, music and visual art, as the entire work is narrated by American actor Kathleen Chalfant. A Barbican co-commission and European premiere, this collaborative performance of the work is the first to be authorised by the TS Eliot Estate. A production of Bard Fisher Center, Four Quartets premiered at Bard SummerScape in July 2018 to critical acclaim, The New York Times calling it 'the greatest creation of dance theater so far this century".
Weston Playhouse is deeply saddened to announce that ?Malcolm Ewen?, Weston Playhouse Theatre Company Founding Director, beloved colleague, and friend, has passed after a long battle with cancer.
It is with regret that the San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) must announce that the Syrian theatre company Collective Ma'louba and the Canadian dance ensemble Compagnie Virginie Brunelle will not be making their respective U.S. debuts as part of this year's Festival program as originally planned. Both companies were refused work visas without a legitimate reason. The denials are symptomatic of a system that is now being deliberately used to try to further isolate the United States from cultural contacts with peoples from around the world.
Today, São Paulo musician Sessa shares “Dez Total (Filhos de Gandhy),” the second single from his stunning debut solo album, Grandeza. A long-time fixture of the American and Brazilian music scenes—known for his collaborations with Yonatan Gat and his co-founding of acclaimed psych-rock group Garotas Suecas—Sessa's solo debut album points to new directions for Brazilian pop, with a perfect balance of subtlety and euphoria that harmonizes its traditional and modern elements. The album displays a deep, minimalist, almost insinuated use of the rich textures and rhythms that define the songwriting history of Brazil, captured perfectly by the simple but lush atmosphere of the new single. Grandeza will be released in digital and vinyl formats on June 4, 2019 via Boiled Records andRISCO. Listen and pre-order HERE.

WSC Avant Bard's Script in Play Festival, started in 2016, has been an opportunity to test out shows for full production treatment through the guise of a series of staged readings and post-play discussions. Written and performed by rising professional talent, these readings have led to some memorable productions, including new versions of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night and Lauren Gunderson's hit Emilie: La Marquise Du Chatelet Defends Her Life Tonight. In 2017, a reading of playwright Matt Minnicino's 'distillation' - not 'adaptation,' as we get into below - of Moliere's The Misanthrope was performed. Written entirely in rhyming couplets, it follows a professional cynic who falls in love with an ingenue, and finds his devotion to insincerity tested. Now, it's the capper of Avant Bard's 29th season. I spoke to Minnicino about his career thus far, the adaptation process, and why audiences should be excited for this show.

Led by a deliciously sinister Benjamin Gerrard, Alexander Berlage's (Director & Lighting Design) AMERICAN PSYCHO is a perfectly polished presentation of Roberto Aguirre-Sarcasa (Book) and Duncan Sheik (Music and Lyrics) musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel.
Under the direction of David Cromer, Writers Theatre presents a NEXT TO NORMAL that is raw and electric. Tom Kitt's music and Brian Yorkey's book and lyrics have an utter immediacy to them in this production (and each note sounds great thanks to the music direction of Andra Velis Simon and the six-piece band.) It's beautifully cast and even more beautifully delivered. Each member of the cast rises to the dual challenge of conveying the messy, deeply personal experience of emotional pain while also hitting the notes of Kitt's complex score with precision.
Tolpegin is magnificent in her portrayal. So often...an actor's depiction of mental illness is totally externalized...sobbing hysterical laughter, jerky body movements. Tolpegin doesn't rely on such tricks. We learn about her through her dialogue and song, but we are not always privy to her private internal struggles and suffering. This is the difference between a caricature and a character.

Los Angeles-based band JEMS will release their debut self-titled album on May 17 (pre-order). In anticipation of Friday's release date the album is streaming in full at Buzzbands LA. About the album Buzzbands LA says, 'JEMS (out Friday) has a lot to offer. 'Right on Time' speaks to yielding to the power of love while maintaining one's own identity. The organ-drenched 'Like Myself' reinforces the notion of taking a stand and finding a truth outside somebody else's “jurisdiction.” Album opener 'Take Me Back' longs for a simpler time — not out of nostalgia but as way of reconnecting with a spirit of freedom uncluttered by compromise. Oh, and JEMS crosses the finish line with a spot-on cover of 'Helplessly Hoping.'' JEMS have also announced a Los Angeles record release show coming up on May 18 at The Hotel Cafe. Tickets are available HERE and all upcoming shows are listed below.
