Highlights from 2018 at the Auditorium Theatre
by A.A. Cristi - Nov 20, 2018

In the Auditorium Theatre's 129th year of existence, we honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the 13th annual Too Hot to Handel: The Jazz-Gospel Messiah; asked "What's This?" on Halloween with a special screening and the Midwest premiere of Disney in Concert's The Nightmare Before Christmas; and sang along to timeless classics like "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" and "Grease" with Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. We reveled alongside the dancers from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; celebrated Ballet Nacional de Cuba's return to Chicago following a 15-year absence; highlighted top local dance companies, including Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Giordano Dance Chicago; and got transported to Mexico with the colorful music and dance of Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez. We also hosted the 14th  year of our Hearts to Art summer camp, a performing arts camp for young people who have experienced the death of a parent; welcomed over 5,000 students to our Student Matinees; and brought thousands of people from across the city to the theatre through our ADMIT ONE program.

SWEENEY TODD Makes Opernhaus Zurich Premiere
by Stephi Wild - Nov 14, 2018

After nearly 30 years, there will be a musical on the stage of the Opernhaus Zurich once again. On December 9, the curtain will rise on Stephen Sondheim's musical thriller Sweeney Todd, in a production by the Opernhaus Zurich. Andreas Homoki stage directs this story of a serial-killer barber, which was also recently made into a film by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp. Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel plays Sweeney Todd - an ideal Todd if there ever was one. The role is murderously difficult and demands an outstanding performer with the darkest of vocal timbres. Terfel has already thrilled audiences as Todd at the English National Opera and at the Lyric Opera Chicago. His partner in crime is Austrian mezzosoprano Angelika Kirchschlager, making her debut as the dutiful purveyor of meat pies. At the podium of the Philharmonia Zurich is David Charles Abbell, a veteran musical theater conductor.

NEVERMORE: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe is a Canadian musical that was written and composed by Jonathan Christenson which follows the rather dismal life and internal struggles of Edgar Allan Poe that later on inspired his work as an author. The script contains references to both his poems and short stories. While most of the script dramatizes true events in his life, other aspects are entirely fictitious. The musical was originally produced at the Catalyst Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta and went on to be performed across Canada, and at the Barbican Theater in London, and the New Victory Theatre in NYC. The current production now playing at Ground Floor Theatre is a remount of the original Doctuh Mistuh production, produced in conjunction with Penfold Theatre, and features most of the original cast.
