Broadway continues its 2014-2015 season momentum. In addition to the 17 shows that have already opened this season -- joining the 18 long-running shows currently playing on the boards -- to date, 19 more shows have announced opening dates this spring with more expected to announce.
On Thursday, November 6th it was announced that Cafe Edison in Times Square is being denied a new lease by The Hotel Edison management. The diner -- which has served as a hub for the Broadway community for more than 30 years -- is expected to close at the end of the year. The story has sparked an outpouring of support from the Broadway community and New Yorkers at large, as well as produced a widely circulated online petition. Among the signees -- numbered at 6,357 supporters (as of 6:30 p.m. on Nov 11) -- are stars Glenn Close, Martha Plimpton, Christine Pedi, Karen Mason, Mary Testa, Joey Parnes, Rob McClure, Teal Wicks, Mamie Parris, Michael Cerveris, Sean Connery, Marc Shaiman, and more. Now, the list is up to 10 theatres, with the Roundabout Theatre Company announcing that its three theatres (The American Airlines, Studio 54 and the Stephen Sondheim Theatre) will dim their lights as well.
The Helen Hayes Theater, where Rivers starred in 1994's 'Sally Marr ... and Her Escorts,' will also dim its lights on Tuesday evening.
Disney joined Jujamcyn in honoring the late comic by announcing that tonight they will dim the lights of the New Amesterdam theater's marquee, home of their current hit musical ALADDIN, in honor of Rivers.

Last week Michael Riedel reported that the 'Shuberts plan to build a state-of-the-art, 1,500-seat Broadway theater between West 45th and 46th streets - sandwiched between Frankie & Johnnie's steakhouse and the Shuberts' Imperial Theatre.'

One of them told Riedel: "I haven't laughed so hard since I saw 'Book of Mormon.'?"

La MaMa concluded its 50th anniversary season with a successful benefit evening highlighted by entertainment and tributes-the La MaMa 50 Big Bash-on Sunday, June 24 at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at NYU in Manhattan. The evening was emceed by the inimitable Tony nominee and longtime La MaMa artist Andre DeShields, who joined other performers, including Gavin Creel, Bill Irwin, David Shiner, Adrian Bailey, Everett Quinton, Lady J and Culture Hub, in entertaining the audience of 600-plus with music and dance that celebrated La MaMa's first 50 years, including an excerpt from its recent hit production of Scott Wittman's JUKEBOX JACKIE featuring Cole Escola and Bridget Everett. The evening was directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer, who appeared as an actor at La MaMa during the early days of his career.
