Next up in my Local Artist's Interview Segment is the lovely theatremaker Angela Witcher. Angela studied with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, trained at E.15 Theatre School in London and has a Masters in Shakespeare studies from the University of Birmingham. She is passionate about performance in all forms, inclusive theatre, promoting new work and talent and encouraging creativity to blossom in the most unlikely places. Angela has over 30 years of theatrical experience as a performer, director, tutor/facilitator and artistic director of a theatre company in the UK. As founder and Artistic Director of Independent theatre company InsideOutside (since 2012), Angela produces and facilitates opportunities for emerging artists to create new work and provides opportunities for people with disability, dementia and disadvantage to experience and create theatre. Anton Chekhov's UNCLE VANYA is New American Theatre's Fall 2019 Production

Critically-acclaimed Hollywood theatre company The New American Theatre (NAT) will present Anton Chekhov's masterpiece Uncle Vanya, directed by Artistic Director Jack Stehlin, who recently was honored along with managing director/producer Jeannine Wisnosky Stehlin with a career achievement award from Stage Raw. Subtitled 'Scenes from a Country Life in Four Acts,' Uncle Vanya is adapted by the company from a translation by Constance Garnett. Opening weekend begins Friday November 1 at 8pm.
President Of Ireland To Confer Composer Roger Doyle As Saoi August 16

On August 16, Heresy Records recording artist, Roger Doyle, will receive the honor of Saoi, the highest award open to an Irish artist. Doyle will be presented with the symbol of the office of Saoi, the gold Torc by Irish President, Michael D. Higgins. The honor is bestowed by Aosdána, the state-supported association of Irish artists.

Heresy Records recording artist, Roger Doyle, will receive the honor of Saoi, the highest award open to an Irish artist. Doyle will be presented with the symbol of the office of Saoi, the gold Torc by Irish President, Michael D. Higgins. The honor is bestowed by Aosdána, the state-supported association of Irish artists. The title of Saoi is awarded for life and held by - at most - seven distinguished artists at a time. Doyle will be the twentieth artist to receive the honor since its inception in 1984. Former award-winners include Samuel Beckett, Seamus Heaney, Brian Friel and Louis Le Brocquy.

Well, it's that time of the year again--time for a look-back on what was worth making note of during the calendar year that's about to come to an end. It's from a totally personal, subjective point of view, of course, but frankly that's the way opera-lovers always seem to like it, n'est-ce pas? The productions worth noting come from places big, small and in-between, from composers old as the hills to freshly minted or somewhere in between (likewise the performers), from traditional or boldly modern to simply stand up and sing.

I hope somebody from New York City Opera was at BAM last weekend, because Mark-Anthony Turnage's GREEK--a modern retelling of the Oedipus myth from Scottish Opera/Opera Ventures, presented by BAM's Next Wave Festival--is just what the doctor ordered for that company. A great story, a small cast, a score that maybe won't leave you humming but moves like gangbusters, a simple production that doesn't look cheesy (except maybe in a mozzarella-ish way). And, oh yes, a happy audience for a work that deserves greater reach on these shores.
