The CM Performing Arts Center may have just kicked off their 46th Season with ALL SHOOK UP that opened this past weekend, but rehearsals are already underway for their follow up production - GREEN DAY'S AMERICAN IDIOT.
Now playing at the adorable Noel S. Ruiz Theatre through September 28th, the lush show features a superb ensemble cast each of whom gets to shine. They're young, but they seem to 'get' this type of music, so devotees of this type of this style need not worry. Some of the iconic artists featured in the fun score are Duke Ellington, Casey MacGill, and Johnny Mercer. And, you're sure to recognize some of the classic song including a?oeIt Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) and a?oeBoogie Woogie Bugle Boya??

Long Island's BroadHollow Theatre Company continues a terrific Summer season with a superb production of the musical Little Shop Of Horrors. This incarnation runs at East Islip's BayWay Theatre through August 26 continuing at their Elmont location beginning September 1st. Directed by Jason Allyn and boasting an excellent cast, this is based on the classic 1960 film. Book writer Howard Ashman pens (and writes the lyrics for) the theatre staple's heartfelt story and Alan Menken's music is a fun fusion of 1960s Rock & Roll, Doo-wop and Motown. You'll more than likely be familiar with the scores' popular tunes including the title song and 'Suddenly, Seymour'.
The incarnation of Bullets Over Broadway, The Musical at Oakdale's Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center (CMPAC), is certainly an enjoyable one. Strongly directed by CMPAC Artistic Director Patrick Grossman, the Long Island premiere, running through August 11th, spectacularly closes out the venue's thrilling 42nd season. And let me tell you this cast is absolutely wonderful.
After seeing Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida at The Noel S. Ruiz Theater at CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale, NY, I can officially say that this theater and production is the closest Long Island will ever get to Broadway! Aida was truly unbelievable and will go down as one of the best theater experiences I've ever had with Long Island theater.
Winner of four 2000 Tony Awards, Elton John & Sir Tim Rice (Official)'s AIDA is an epic tale of love, loyalty, and betrayal, chronicling a love triangle between Aida, a Nubian princess stolen from her country, Amneris, an Egyptian princess, and Radames, the soldier they both love.
Theatre is about pushing the boundaries of what's expected. In the Cultural Arts Playhouse's latest production of Fiddler on the Roof, director Eliana Kayelle has taken many risks in her telling of the Broadway classic.
Opening their 41st season in tremendous style, the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center offers a superb production of the Tony winning musical Dreamgirls. Running through October 1st at the Oakdale venue, this incarnation boasts a stupendous cast who are absolute naturals in their respective roles. Excellently directed by CM Artistic Director Patrick Grossman (who also serves as Choreographer and Set Designer), the show is certainly a must see for the fall season.
The "summer of love" has officially dawned at The Merrick Theater as an energetic and inspired production of the tribal rock musical "Hair" plays until July 16.
There are Broadway musicals that are frothy and flimsy and there are those that are thrillers and haunt you long after you leave the theater. One of the most memorable with that kind of staying power is Jekyll & Hyde the classic tale based upon the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. Jekyll & Hyde opened on Broadway in 1997, with 1543 performances over four years and was nominated for four Tony Awards. A local production of that time honored tale opens at Star Playhouse at the Suffolk Y-JCC tonight, November 8.
