Dr. Sharrell D. Luckett To Discuss Black Acting Methods

Celebrating the recent publication of Black Acting Methods: Critical Approaches (Routledge 2017),  Dr. Sharrell D. Luckett will host a conversation with fellow theatre teachers, researchers, and makers, Kashi Johnson and Jonathan Mathias Lassiter, concerning the decolonization of acting methods and pedagogies. While recent conversations tend to focus on norms of representation, this event seeks to explore the myriad eurocentric assumptions that are at play in the formative process of acting, and to present alternatives that stem from African legacies, sensibilities, and experiences. In addition to the public conversation, a closed session for interested actors will take place during the afternoon. Registration to the session is now closed.

Gary Beck's New Poetry Book 'The Remission Of Order' Released

In this ever-changing world, it becomes more and more difficult to sift through events and recognize what is truly relevant. Poet Gary Beck once again shines a light on the uncomfortable abuses and deceptions that keep us opposing one another, believing people with different opinions are the enemy, while we are all victimized by a common foe.

Take A Journey To Chicago's Southside With A Modern Re-Imagining Of ANTIGONE

The Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance, a program in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University, is proud to present Nambi Kelley's "Xtigone," a contemporary look at a classic Greek drama. Opening on Friday, October 12 at 8:00 p.m. in the Studio Theatre at the Hilberry. "Xtigone" is a poignant and timely story about a woman mourning the death of her two brothers, mowed down by a rival gang. Using hip hop poetry, dance, and dialogue that speaks with an urban voice, this re-imagining of Sophocles' "Antigone" tells the story of a woman's quest for her community's truth.

The Wallis Presents Los Angeles Master Chorale's LAGRIME DI SAN PIETRO

Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, a dynamic hub for the lively arts and vital community resource, presents the Los Angeles Master Chorale in two performances of Orlando di Lasso's dramatic a cappella masterpiece Lagrime di San Pietro (Tears of St. Peter) directed by Peter Sellars on Saturday, October 20, and Sunday, October 21, 2018, at 7:30 pm, in the Bram Goldsmith Theater at The Wallis. Conducted by the Master Chorale's Associate Conductor Jenny Wong and featuring 21 singers, the production is the first a cappella staging and most personal and emotionally-charged work to date from the acclaimed director's creative mind. Twenty-one singers transform the 75-minute Renaissance masterpiece - committed to memory and dramatically staged - into both a biblical parable of St. Peter's disavowal of Jesus Christ and a contemporary allegory for our fractious times. This marks The Wallis debut of the Master Chorale, whose appearance is part of a 13-city international tour that also includes performances at the Ravinia Festival in Illinois, the Melbourne International Arts Festival in Australia, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, The Barbican Centre in London and the Cite de la Musique in Paris.

Just before this Tony-award winning play opened on September 4, I had the chance to chat with two of the show's stars. Labhaiose Magee is making her Everyman debut in the role of Rose, while Tim Getman, a member of the Everyman company plays Michael.

Sam Strong on QUEENSLAND THEATRE'S 2019 Season

It's been nearly two weeks since Queensland Theatre released this 2019 season, and it's taken me nearly two weeks to comprehend exactly how colourful and formidable next year is going to be. A few days before the season launch, I had the pleasure of having doing a phone interview with Strong, who had just come from the closing celebrations for the company's successful run of Jasper Jones.
