Take A Journey To Chicago's Southside With A Modern Re-Imagining Of ANTIGONE

Take A Journey To Chicago's Southside With A Modern Re-Imagining Of ANTIGONE ImageThe Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance, a program in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University, is proud to present Nambi Kelley's "Xtigone," a contemporary look at a classic Greek drama. Opening on Friday, October 12 at 8:00 p.m. in the Studio Theatre at the Hilberry. "Xtigone" is a poignant and timely story about a woman mourning the death of her two brothers, mowed down by a rival gang. Using hip hop poetry, dance, and dialogue that speaks with an urban voice, this re-imagining of Sophocles' "Antigone" tells the story of a woman's quest for her community's truth.

Director Cheryl Turski describes "Xtigone" as a collage of ancient Greek drama, the Southside of Chicago in the 2010s, jazz rhythms and hip-hop rhymes, and ancestral Spiritual traditions. "There are gangs and mothers. Sisters and brothers. Guns and politics and power and war" and she asks you to listen to their stories. Come follow Tigs, a young woman with a warrior's soul, as she fights to expose the truth about her brothers' deaths and take down the tyranny of her uncle along the way. But she quickly learns that instead of dealing with the reality of violence in the city's streets, her uncle intends to bury the bodies without investigation. Will she risk death by opposing her uncle?

Partnered with the Foster Closet of Michigan, Theatre and Dance at Wayne is hosting a shoe drive throughout the run of the show. Donation boxes are located in the lobby of the Studio Theatre and at the box office in the Hilberry. Foster Closet of Michigan accepts new and very gently used shoes, sizes children's 8 to adult 8, and has a set a goal of collecting 124 pairs of shoes. The shoe drive will run from Sept. 24 through Oct. 31.

"Xtigone" runs for three weekends, Oct. 12 through 27, 2018. Tickets are available by phone at (313) 577-2972, online www.theatreanddanceatwayne.com, or by visiting the box office at 4743 Cass Avenue at the corner of Hancock Street.

A convenience fee of $2 per ticket is automatically added to your ticket when purchasing online. Additional fees may be required per order. The Studio Theatre at The Hilberry is only accessible via stairs.
