Monumental Theatre Company received nine Helen Award nominations at theatreWashington's 2019 Helen Hayes Award Nominations Announcement Event held on February 4, 2019, at The National Theatre. Brooklyn the Musical received five total nominations including Outstanding Production in a Musical. Pippin received four total nominations. This is the first year that Monumental Theatre Company has been eligible for nomination to the Helen Hayes Awards.

It's hard to believe that it's been over 40 years now since a little revue that started at New York's Manhattan Theatre Club took Broadway by storm. The show was Ain't Misbehavin' and if you didn't know who composer Thomas “Fats” Waller was before, you did after seeing this show. It also made Nell Carter a star and garnered her a television series called Gimme a Break. Besides Carter the cast was comprised of Charlaine Woodard, Armelia McQueen, Andre De Shields, and Ken Page. When the original cast returned for a Broadway revival of the show in the 80's, Nell Carter received star billing even though the show is truly an ensemble piece. Ah, the power of television.
The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica presents the return of The Reverend Shawn Amos for A Night in Harlem today, February 1 at 8:00pm. In celebration of African American History Month, blackbox curator, Amos, returns to the stage for an evening of songs and storytelling - presenting songs from his album, Harlem, for the first time in ten years. The American roots song cycle tells the story of 1920s black Americans' migration from the south to Harlem. Amos' album was inspired by the artists, songs and legacy of the Harlem Renaissance.

So, he and the team at Critical Frequency have packaged these songs, one per episode, into what plays like a half-hour radio show w/ conversations, storytelling and cool sound design (comprised entirely of the stems for that song).
