Laura Rathe Fine Art Presents Erased: Nicole Charbonnet and Rosemary Barile

Acclaimed Houston gallery, Laura Rathe Fine Art, announces the exhibition of new paintings by Nicole Charbonnet and Rosemary Barile with an opening reception on Saturday, June 7th, 2014, from 6 - 9pm. The Erased collection will be on view through July 5, 2014. About the Artists Nicole Charbonnet LRFA introduces Nicole Charbonnet, painter from New Orleans, LA, with her first exhibition in Houston. Charbonnet's multi-layered, textural paintings serve as a metaphor for the phenomenon of recollection. Her work embodies the processes of memory through layers of watery washes of paint, reminiscent of frescos, that veil images of popular culture. From cowboys to comic book figures, Charbonnet uncovers and recovers these images to portray the nuances of memory. Her paintings are ultimately the combination of what she calls the 'superimposition of textures, images, collage, words and paint which create surfaces that retain or reveal a memory of preexisting stages' where some images remain visible and others are obscured. After graduating from the University of Virginia, Charbonnet went on to receive her MFA from Boston University where she served as a Teacher's Assistant. She has been featured in many solo shows across the country and has been awarded numerous foundation grants, fellowships, and residencies. Rosemary Barile The Sante Fe artist, Rosemary Barile, is heavily influenced by Japanese fiber art. Silk is incorporated into the majority of her panels onto which she employs Shibori (resist) dyeing techniques. The fabric is rusted against metal or oxidized on copper building intricate patterns reminiscent of those found in nature. All together with encaustic; a combination of molten, pigmented beeswax and damar resin that hardens as it cools, the paintings are uniquely organic with a serene, soothing quality. Barile received both her BFA and MFA from the University of Washington in Seattle and attended the Shibori Symposium in Japan. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States. About Laura Rathe Fine Art Formally established in 1998, Laura Rathe Fine Art represents a dynamic artist roster including emerging, mid-career, as well as blue-chip contemporary artists. Cabaret Life NYC: KAREN OBERLIN Performing the Songs of Doris Day Is One of Cabaret's Most Ideal Matches of Singer to Subject

I was just a little more than a year into my new side career as a cabaret show reviewer when I first saw a Karen Oberlin show. It was Valentine's Day night 2012 and Oberlin—with guitarist Sean Harkness and guest violinist Aaron Weinstein—would be performing her romance-laced set, Stringing Along With Love, at the Metropolitan Room. At the time, all I knew about Oberlin was that she was considered among New York's best female cabaret singers, and I hadn't researched her performing history pre-show. About a third of the way into her set I leaned over to my wife (it was Valentine's Day after all) and whispered, “You know, she has a real Doris Day quality in her voice and in the way she delivers some lyrics.” This immediately ratcheted up my appreciation for Oberlin since there are four passions I inherited from my Dad—baseball, reading the morning papers, sports writing and Doris Day (well, also Sophia Loren, but that's for another column). Since Dad had grown up during the prime of the Big Band Era of the 1940s, I heard the sultry sounds of a young Doris Day singing songs like “Sentimental Journey” on the family stereo more than a few times. Once I saw Day's strikingly adorable blondness on a record cover and her rocking body in one of her films, I knew what Dad was talking about. As popular, famous, and near iconic as Doris Day became, in my book, as a singer and screen beauty she's always been vastly underrated. Little did I know that Karen Oberlin had been doing a Doris Day tribute show so since 2001 at places like Firebird, Iridium, and the late Danny's Skylight Room, and produced a CD, Secret Love: The Music of Doris Day, in 2002. Karen Oberlin had instantly become my secret love.

Hampton Theatre Company to Close 29th Season with GOD OF CARNAGE, 5/22-6/8

The all-too-thin veneer of tolerance and civility is first frayed and then comically shredded when two sets of parents attempt to discuss an altercation between their sons in Yasmina Reza's 'God of Carnage,' the Hampton Theatre Company's final production of the 2013-2014 season, running from May 22 to June 8 at the Quogue Community Hall.
