The Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance forges forward with the 17th annual BAAD!ASS WOMEN FESTIVAL, celebrating the empowerment of women through art, culture and performance. The festival runs from March 9 -28 and includes evenings of dance, literature, film music and performance, The festival takes place at BAAD!, 2474 Westchester Avenue in the Westchester Square section of the Bronx. The American Dance Festival (ADF) will award the 2018 Balasaraswati/Joy Anne Dewey Beinecke Endowed Chair for Distinguished Teaching to two central figures in the breaking community, celebrated hip-hop dance artists Ana 'Rokafella' Garcia and Gabriel “Kwikstep” Dionisio. Live music will be included in this colorful tribute, curated by Rajika Puri, doyenne of Indian Dance in NYC.
The American Tap Dance Foundation (ATDF), under the artistic direction of Tony Waag, presented its 5th yearly showcase Rhythm in Motion, March 29-April 2, 2017 at the Duke on 42nd Street. The series featured two distinct programs of fresh, groundbreaking tap dance choreography, with some strong and emotional statements. This is a very interesting time for tap dance as “the world has finally realized that tap dance and tap choreography can also test the audience, tell a story, be influenced by world issues and express anger, fear, sadness, and spirituality” said Mr. Waag, ATDF Artistic/Executive Director and curator of this show. The program featured some of the best and emerging tap dancers/choreographers of this time.

As part of the tenth edition of its celebrated contemporary arts festival Crossing the Line, the French Institute Alliance Francaise (FIAF) and the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations are thrilled to launch BRIDGING: A French-American Dialogue on Diversity and Inclusion in the Arts, a new initiative exploring issues of cultural equity in the US and France.

Well it may have been hotter than blazes this past weekend but I managed to spend the weekend inside at one of my favorite events of the year, The Village Theatre Village Originals Festival of New Musicals. They presented concert stagings of five musicals still in the works. It's a great opportunity for the authors to get to see their shows in front of an audience and for us to get a sneak peak at amazing musical theater to come. Now as they are still being workshopped I can't really review any of them but I can tell you what I saw.
