Since 2011 Mezzo-soprano Ginger Costa-Jackson has sung the title role in 12 different productions of Bizet's Carmen. She will star in yet another this month for San Diego Opera. From here it's on to rehearsals for nine performances of Bizet's masterwork at Seattle Opera. Is the singer tiring of Carmen? Not even close. She loves the character's sense of freedom and empowerment, and works with each new director to make her performance even more convincing.
Since my days as a pothead are long gone (LOL)—did anyone ever watch 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY without a little help from a friend?--I came to the Boston Symphony's (BSO) concert at Carnegie Hall the other night more interested in hearing the excerpts from Richard Strauss's CAPRICCIO, including Renee Fleming in its final scene, than in the composer's ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA. As it turned out, both parts of the concert, under Music Director Andris Nelsons, had much to recommend.
Lincoln Center Theater presents Nantucket Sleigh Ride, a new play by John Guare. Nantucket Sleigh Ride, directed by Jerry Zaks, which opened last night, March 18 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater (150 West 65 Street).
Scenario Two have announced further casting for the London debut of the acclaimed Broadway musical The Light in the Piazza. The Light in the Piazza will be performed in a full staging at the Royal Festival Hall in a limited run of only twenty performances directed by Olivier award-winner, Daniel Evans, designed by Robert Jones with costumes by Brigitte Reiffenstuel, lighting by Mark Henderson and sound by Mick Potter. The ravishing score will be played by the 35 piece orchestra of Opera North under the baton of Kimberly Grigsby, conductor of the original Lincoln Center production.
FEINSTEIN'S/54 BELOW, Broadway's Supper Club, presents LA LUNA QUARTET in "LA LUNA QUARTET IN CONCERT" on March 28, 2019 at 9:30 PM. Soprano Stacy Dove, mezzo-soprano Sishel Claverie, tenor Blake Friedman and baritone Eric McKeever will present a program of famous operatic and musical theater tunes sometimes performed as they are meant to be and sometimes "Fach'ed Up", where each artist will perform selections outside of their normal voice type or gender. La Luna will also turn opera on its ear by taking famous arias, duets and ensembles and, with the help of the audience, improvise a new story on the spot. On Monday, October 29, Sing for Hope held its 12th annual Sing for Hope Gala, uniting New York's philanthropic and cultural leaders for a magical evening in support of the organization's programs and commitment to bring the arts to under-resourced areas. The event, co-chaired by Ann Ziff, Renee Fleming, and Muhammad Yunus, with Vice Chairs Dr. William Isacoff and Linda E.
