Live Arts Theater has announced a dynamic lineup of four plays, a powerhouse musical, and a new works festival for its 2023/24 Expectations Season. The 33rd anniversary season opens with Anton Chekhov's UNCLE VANYA performed in rotating repertory with LIFE SUCKS. by Aaron Posner, followed by a holiday offering-the sequel to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice-MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon. The Tony award-winning musical KINKY BOOTS hits the Live Arts stage in the new year, with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and book by Harvey Fierstein, followed by the Virginia premiere of the powerful two-hander FIREFLIES by Donja R. Love. The Expectations Season closes with the return of the Live Arts WATERWORKS festival, a month-long celebration of new theatrical works that brought in more than 600 submissions and engaged hundreds of volunteers during its inaugural year.

Sydney Fringe Festival, the city's largest independent arts festival, launches this week with a dynamic program of over 400 events and 12 festival hubs taking over the city until 30 September. The Festival kicks off with Fringe Ignite on Saturday 2 September, headlined by the iconic Rogue Traders alongside live performances by The Great West, False London, MUNGMUNG, PEPTALK and DJ Victoria Anthony.
In 2015 our newly formed theatre company, then called ‘The Pretend Men’, debuted our first ever piece of work at The New Wolsey’s ‘Pulse Theatre Festival’ in Ipswich. ‘Pulse’ is a curated festival for artists to develop, grow and connect with audiences, something we desperately needed to do in 2015. They have a wonderful competition called ‘The Suitcase Award’ where artists can present a 20 minute work-in-progress of whatever they are currently working on
Its strength is obviously in its joyous and uncompromising queer nature. McDougall casts it entirely gender-blind, making it a piece where gender doesn’t matter, even though its role is at the very core of it. They turn it into an exploration of the performative quality of identity with plenty of tongue-in-cheek moments that tug at the artifice of drama.
Family-friendly shows like Kinder can serve and do deserve the widest audience and, despite its dark material, it edifies and satisfies without dumbing down or skirting the emotional impact of the situations they depict. In a fast-moving hour, it delivers a brilliant blend of clever storytelling and smart theatre which is suitable for children and essential for adults.
