Museum of the Moving Image Releases Overview of Programs & Exhibitions for Summer 2014

Astoria, New York, June 18, 2014—Museum of the Moving Image announces its major film series and exhibitions for the summer. Highlights include a new exhibition and accompanying film series exploring the work of the legendary animation director Chuck Jones(opening July 19), films by Gustav Deutsch (July 25–27), See It Big! Hollywood Melodrama (August 2–31), films by Hong Kong producer, director, and actor Patrick Lung Kong, with Lung Kong and Tsui Hark in person (August 15–24), and a complete retrospective of Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien (beginning September 12). Robert De Niro to Join Robert Pattinson in Olivier Assayas' IDOL'S EYE

Benaroya Pictures has announced today that they are now on board to produce and finance director Olivier Assayas' IDOL'S EYE, with a confirmed cast that includes Robert Pattinson and Robert De Niro. Charles Gillibert developed and produced the project with CG Cinema, Bluegrass Films' Scott Stuber, Film 360's Scott Lambert, Alexandra Milchan and Michael Benaroya, with Ben Sachs executive producing for Benaroya Pictures. The film is scheduled to begin principal photography in October in Chicago and Toronto.

Clouds of Sils Maria is a drama film written and directed by Olivier Assayas, and starring Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, and Chloe Grace Moretz. The film is a German-French-Swiss co-production. It has been selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival on May 23, 2014. Check out red carpet photos below!

Film Comment's annual end-of-the-year survey of film critics, journalists, film section editors, and past and present contributors was released today with Joel & Ethan Coen's INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, Steve McQueen's 12 YEARS A SLAVE and Richard Linklater's BEFORE MIDNIGHT taking the top spots among films released in 2013. Among films that made appearances at film festivals or special screenings worldwide, but haven't been picked up for stateside distribution as of yet, Philippe Garrel's JEALOUSY, Tsai Ming-liang's STRAY DOGS and Joaquim Pinto's WHAT NOW? REMIND ME received the top rankings.

Returning to feature filmmaking after his brilliant 2010 mini-series 'Carlos,' in Olivier Assayas' 'Something in the Air' it is 1971 and Gilles (newcomer Clement Metayer) is a graduating high school student in Paris deeply involved in the counterculture of the time. As Gilles begins to realize that his interests lie more in the revolutions in art and music, he finds himself pulled into ever more dangerous political protests by the people around him, especially his radicalized girlfriend, Christine (Lola Creton). After a vandalism attack against their school goes terribly wrong, Gilles and his friends flee to Italy, where they spend a bohemian summer in the countryside drifting between parties, rallies and agitprop film screenings. Amidst this whirlwind of politics, art and sex, the group discovers that at their age every day holds new possibilities, and life awaits the curious.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today the main slate of selections for the 50th New York Film Festival (September 28-October 14) including such notable directors as Olivier Assayas, Noah Baumbach, Leos Carax, Brian De Palma, Michael Haneke, Abbas Kiarostami, Ang Lee, Cristian Mungiu, Sally Potter, Alain Resnais, Raul Ruiz and Robert Zemeckis.
