If it's true about Christmas being the most wonderful time of the year, Manila's theater fans may add to their list of good tidings a promising new tradition courtesy of Globe LIVE and 9 Works Theatrical.

In upholding the Christmas tradition, the Philippines is without peer among nations. Let the world tend to its business while local radio begins the celebration with a Yuletide playlist--on the first of September.

Repertory Philippines (REP), a pioneering professional theater company, announced earlier today its 2018-2019 season , which includes Ken Ludwig's A Comedy of Tenors (January 26 to February 18), Lauren Gunderson's 'Silent Sky (March 2 to 25), Joseph Kesselring's Arsenic and Old Lace (April 6 to 29), Janet Yates Vogt & Mark Friedman's Rapunzel! Rapunzel (September 15, 2018 to January 27, 2019), and Joy Virata and Ian Monsod's Miong (March 22 to April 14, 2019).

Arman Ferrer (Julio Madiaga), Shiela Valderrama-Martinez, (Ligaya Paraiso), and Lara Maigue (Ligaya Paraiso) lead the cast of the stage musical adaptation of Edgardo Reyes' novel 'Maynila sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag' (Manila in the Claws of Light), which inspired the Lino Brocka classic film version that starred Bembol Roco and Hilda Koronel.

When the film adaptation of Edgardo Reyes's novel Maynila, sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag, helmed by acclaimed director Lino Brocka, was first released, it was praised by critics for its brave and honest depiction of the quality (or lack thereof) of urban life during the Marcos administration. Surprisingly, even for someone who was not born yet in the '70s, this stage musical adaptation of the four-decade-old novel did not feel like a dated social commentary. It strangely (or sadly) still represents a familiar story of the Filipino poor hoping for a better life in urban Manila.

MAYNILA SA MGA KUKO NG LIWANAG, The Musical is about love that will go the distance, the loss of innocence, and why in a dark, downtrodden jungle that is the big city, pure love is not given room to thrive, its synopsis partially says.

Satisfyingly, the show was a consistent laughtrip from the minute you heard the VO up until the last note. The Fisch Schlapping Song made me laugh like I haven't laughed in ages. I knew then that I was in for a very, very entertaining night.

'Mame'), opened Saturday, February 28, and will run through Sunday, March 29, at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza in Makati City.

Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott's PRISCILLA , QUEEN OF THE DESERT, based on the 1994 sleeper hit 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,' is Resorts World Manila's (RWM) fifth theatrical production right on the heels of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 'Cinderella.' The production, helmed by Jaime del Mundo ('The Producers'), opened Friday, May 9, at Newport Performing Arts Theatre.
