New York Live Arts Presents John Jasperse's WITHIN BETWEEN, Now thru 5/31

New York Live Arts presents the world premiere of John Jasperse's Within between, today, May 28 - 31 at 7:30pm in the New York Live Arts Theater. Known widely as a 'choreographer who combines formal purity and pungent social commentary...one of the best of the truly experimental artists' (The New York Times), Jasperse presents his newest evening-length work in a four-day run concluding New York Live Arts' 2013-14 season.

Critics Ben Brantley, Peter Marks and Terry Teachout Set for THEATER TALK, Beg. 5/30

With Tony Awards fever growing ever hotter -- the Tony telecast is June 8 -- THEATER TALK assembles a panel of key critics to share their opinions about the just-concluded theater season. Ben Brantley of The New York Times, Peter Marks of The Washington Post and Terry Teachout of The Wall Street Journal speak candidly about the highs and lows of what they have seen "on the aisle" in Critics Spring Review, co-hosted by Michael Riedel of the New York Post and Susan Haskins. This episode premieres Friday, May 30 (2014) at 1 AM (Saturday morning) on Thirteen/PBS, and repeats in the New York metro area on CUNY TV* Saturday 5/31 at 8:30 PM, Sunday 6/1 at 12:30 PM, and Monday 6/2 at 7:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 7:30 PM.

The New York Philharmonic Presents THE GLENN DICTEROW COLLECTION, 6/3

The New York Philharmonic will mark Glenn Dicterow's farewell - following 34 years as Concertmaster, the longest tenure of any concertmaster in Philharmonic history - with the release of New York Philharmonic Presents: The Glenn Dicterow Collection, three albums on the New York Philharmonic label featuring Mr. Dicterow's favorite solo performances from 1982 to 2012. The first album will be available on CD, which comes with a 90-page commemorative booklet that includes program notes with Mr. Dicterow's comments, essays about Mr. Dicterow by Alan Gilbert and Archivist/Historian Barbara Haws, photographs, and a complete list of Mr. Dicterow's solo performances. It will also be available as a download on iTunes and Amazon.com. The second and third albums will be available as downloads only. The CD and booklet are $16.99; the downloads are $9.99 each or $24.99 for all three downloadable albums. The collection, distributed by Naxos, is now available for pre-order; it will be available for purchase and download on nyphil.org/DicterowCollection beginning June 3.

Two years ago, The New Ohio Theatre and IRT Theater (new neighbors in the historic Archive Building on Christopher Street) kicked-off their exciting new developing and presenting initiative: the Archive Residency. The Archive Residency offers select independent theatre companies a two-year commitment of space, artistic support, and institutional continuity for the development and presentation of a new work.

The New York Philharmonic Presents A CELEBRATION OF PHIL SMITH, 7/5

The New York Philharmonic will salute departing Principal Trumpet Philip Smith - who will step down from his position at the end of the 2013-14 season following 36 seasons of service - in A Celebration of Phil Smith, a concert featuring the New York Philharmonic Brass and Percussion Ensemble, conducted by Mr. Smith and Bramwell Tovey, July 5, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. The program will also include works that showcase brass: an arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov's Procession of the Nobles; a Horn Quartet by Gershwin; Tomasi's Liturgical Fanfares; an arrangement of The Great Gate of Kiev from Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition; and Pollack's That's a Plenty, which the New York Philharmonic Principal Brass Quintet, of which Mr. Smith was a founding member, has frequently performed as an encore on the Orchestra's tours. Philharmonic musicians will introduce the works and speak about Mr. Smith.

The annual Tony® Awards ceremony celebrating "Broadway's best" arrives on June 8, and THEATER TALK, in its time-honored tradition, reconvenes its opinionated panel of journalist-critics Jesse Green (New York Magazine), entertainment columnist Michael Musto (Out.com), and Patrick Pacheco (The Los Angeles Times) to share their instincts and insights about this year's nominations and who will win. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM to Run 7/5-19 at Highland Bowl

The Shakespeare Players program of the Rochester Community Players will present eleven performances of A Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare, July 5 to 19, 2014. Performances will be presented every night between July 5 and 19, except Mondays and Thursdays. All performance times are 8:00 PM. There is no admission charge for this FREE Shakespeare in the Park production (donations will be solicited).

Muna Tseng Dance Projects Responds to Chuck Ginnever Sculptures at Riverside Park Today

s, The New York Department of Parks & Recreation, Chuck Ginnever, and Gayle Maxon-Edgerton, GME LLC, announce two special evening performances by the Muna Tseng Dance Projects today, May 17 and May 24 at 7pm, whose newly commissioned choreography will directly engage with an exhibition of monumental steel sculptures by noted American artist, Chuck Ginnever. Medusa and High Rise, currently on view at Riverside Park at 145th Street, is situated overlooking the metal ice breakers and the George Washington Bridge, and has inspired the dance troupe's second collaboration with the artist, nearly thirty years after their first project together.

Museum of the Moving Image Presents 'American Meshuggana,' Begin. Tonight

Museum of the Moving Image presents a new video installation, AMERICAN MESHUGGANA, by the South Korea-based art collective YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES. The new work places the duo's signature text-based animations set to an original jazz score on a noirish, continuous black-and-white shot of urban traffic. The 18-minute video, which winds its way from an imaginary Chinese restaurant in Astoria to Nazi-occupied Paris, was commissioned by the Museum. It will be on view in the lobby, as a 50x8-foot-long projection, from May 16 through September 21, 2014 and was organized by Associate Curator of Digital Media Jason Eppink.

Judi Jackson, Sarah K. Chalmers & More to Lead Kitchen Theatre's SLASHES OF LIGHT, 6/11-29

The Kitchen Theatre Company and Civic Ensemble are excited to announce the casting of the world premiere of SLASHES OF LIGHT by Judy Tate. SLASHES OF LIGHT tells the story of an African American girl's coming-of-age in Chicago's South Side during the turbulent 1960s. This production connects Civic Ensemble's focus on community-based work by women and people of color with the Kitchen's two decades of producing bold, intimate work that starts 'important conversations.' Previews are June 11, 12 and 13, opening night is June 14, and the play closes on June 29.

Kitchen Theatre Presents THE LORD OF THE UNDERWORLD'S HOME FOR UNWED MOTHERS This Weekend

Kitchen Theatre Company's experimental Kitchen Sink Series is bringing a new play by young playwright Louisa Hill to the Kitchen stage. The Lord Of The Underworld's Home For Unwed Mothers is a modern re-telling of the Demeter and Persephone myth set in the 1960s and 1990s, exploring the politics of motherhood. When Dee meets the daughter she was forced to give up 25 years ago, the reunion is less than ideal. To show her Death Metal enthusiast daughter, Corie, that she wasn't given up out of selfishness, Dee must return to her teenage memories of Catholic, middle-class life in the 1960s to explain how the choice was never hers to make. But the despondent Corie, whose turbulent childhood consisted of being shipped from one foster home to the next, has a secret of her own. A tale of love, loss, and some heavy metal, running for two nights only, this weekend, May 16 and 17 at 4pm.
