Kitchen Theatre Presents THE LORD OF THE UNDERWORLD'S HOME FOR UNWED MOTHERS This Weekend
Kitchen Theatre Company's experimental Kitchen Sink Series is bringing a new play by young playwright Louisa Hill to the Kitchen stage. The Lord Of The Underworld's Home For Unwed Mothers is a modern re-telling of the Demeter and Persephone myth set in the 1960s and 1990s, exploring the politics of motherhood. When Dee meets the daughter she was forced to give up 25 years ago, the reunion is less than ideal. To show her Death Metal enthusiast daughter, Corie, that she wasn't given up out of selfishness, Dee must return to her teenage memories of Catholic, middle-class life in the 1960s to explain how the choice was never hers to make. But the despondent Corie, whose turbulent childhood consisted of being shipped from one foster home to the next, has a secret of her own. A tale of love, loss, and some heavy metal, running for two nights only, this weekend, May 16 and 17 at 4pm.
Louisa Hill is a young, award-winning playwright. The Lord of the Underworld's Home for Unwed Mothers was awarded a Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival prize - the Mark Twain Award for Comic Playwriting, and her play Annette Kellerman Forever! was chosen to be featured by the Brimmer Street Theatre Company (Los Angeles) in their Blueprint Series. Currently, she is working as a writer's assistant and researcher on the television series Unforgettable.
The Kitchen Sink production is directed by Artistic Intern Sarah Scafidi (directing credits include: [title of show], The Best Laid Plans, Mr. Bundy, and more. At the Kitchen, Sarah has assisted artistic director Rachel Lampert and acted as assistant director and dramaturg for the season).
The cast includes local artists Lisa VillaMil, Christina Brewington, Katie Bruno, and Nicholas Shuhan.
Scenic and Sound Design/Consulting is by E-hui Woo (Ithaca College), and featuring the work of Kitchen Theatre Interns. Lighting Design is by Anna Kirkland, and Costume Consulting is by Amanda Aiken.
