Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) continues its Spring 2019 season on Friday, April 12, 2019 at 7:30pm with a performance by St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble +Adam Rosenblatt, percussionist, at BAC's Jerome Robbins Theater (450 W. 37th Street). Rosenblatt will perform Belgian composer Thierry de Mey's theatrical and dramatic piece Light Music, in which movements and gestures produce light and sound through interactive technology. This interdisciplinary solo performance will be bookended by Viennese classics - Joseph Haydn's festive Divertimento for Strings from 1754 and Joseph Lanner's charming 19th century waltzes, performed by the St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble. These virtuosic musicians make up the artistic core of the renowned Orchestra of St. Luke's - who share the performing arts complex with BAC at 450 W. 37th Street.
The Asian American Arts Alliance is proud to present a panel of pioneering women journalists on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. In keeping with its mission of connecting its community and providing direct access to cultural gatekeepers, the Alliance is organizing a panel of journalists to share their unique perspectives as Asian American women. More to the Story: Asian American Women Journalists Respond brings together five highly accomplished writers, critics, producers, and editors to share their insights on the shifting landscape of journalism and their roles as cultural arbiters. Panelists Dawn Chen, Jennifer Kho, Diep Tran, Junko Tsunashima, and moderator Lilly Wei will discuss their personal journeys within their chosen fields as well as provide insights to those interested in entering (and staying in) journalism. Participants will be able to ask questions at the end of the discussion.
Calpulli Mexican Dance Company (Calpulli) will premiere'Puebla: The Story of Cinco de Mayo' (Puebla) at Queens Theatre on April 13 - 14, followed by a national tour with performances in Texas, Georgia and New Jersey. The Queens-based Company, now in its 16th year, received a national award from the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) making the new production possible. Under the artistic direction of Alberto Lopez Herrera, 'Puebla' tells a universal tale of the underdog fighting impossible odds. The setting is the Battle of Puebla when a small army of Mexican soldiers and commoners defeated the French army, the strongest military force of the time, on the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), 1862. Through folkloric and contemporary dance, live music and elaborate costuming, the Company will elaborate on the history of the now-famous date and celebrate the culture and people of Puebla. Broadway and TV star Brandon J. Dirden (All the Way, Jitney, The Americans) hosted the 11th annual New York City August Wilson Monologue Competition, sponsored by LEAP (Learning through an Expanded Arts Program, Inc.). A total of 15 LEAP students from nine New York high schools in four boroughs brought the audience to their feet as they embodied Wilson's characters and provided their own interpretations-immersing them in Wilson's world of 10 plays, referred to as The Century Cycle.
The Havana Film Festival NY (www.HFFNY.com), project of The American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba (AFLFC), announced the sixteen films competing to receive the Havana Star Prize for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Documentary, which will be awarded on Monday, April 15 at the AMC Loews 34th Street, 7:30 pm. The Festival takes place April 5-16 in venues throughout the city, including Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx. All foreign language films are subtitled in English.
FRIGID New York @ Horse Trade in association with Manhattan Theatre Source will present the 2019 EstroGenius Festival, the longest running festival celebrating the work of women and gender non-conforming artists in NYC. Begun in Manhattan Theatre Source in 2000 as a short-play festival, the festival has launched and supported hundreds of artists in its 19 years. In 2017 the festival moved to its new home at The Kraine Theatre on E. 4th St.

New York Live Arts (Live Arts) to present the New York premiere of Netta Yerushalmy's Paramodernities, March 14-17, 2019, having commissioned the work as part of the Live Feed Residency Program. The complete six-part encyclopedic series is a multidisciplinary work that weaves theory and performance into a four-hour-long hybrid event. Yerushalmy and a cast of 20 dancers and scholars, ranging in age from 20 to 68, perform deconstructed installments of Nijinsky's “Sacre” (1913), Graham's “Night Journey” (1947), Ailey's “Revelations” (1960), a mix of Cunningham works “Rainforest,” “Sounddance”, “Points in Space”, “Beach Birds”, and “Ocean” (1968-1990), dance numbers from the 1969 Fosse's film “Sweet Charity”, and a response to Balanchine's “Agon” (1957) that includes none of the original choreography.

The OMNI Ensemble will continue its 36th season of concerts at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 8:00 pm. The program will feature music for flute, cello and piano. Also being performed are improvisations by The OMNI Ensemble featuring the Kora, an indigenous African string instrument. Music will be Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata op. 28, arranged for trio by Jim Lahti, Bohuslav Martinu's Trio for flute, cello and piano, Peter Schickele's Summer Trio, Michael Sirotta's Emanations Of Blue Light-A Rhapsody for Flute and Piano, and electronic and acoustic improvisations by The OMNI Ensemble featuring the Kora. Musicians are David Wechsler - flutes, John Cheek - keyboards, with guest artists Eric Cooper - cello and Salieu Suso - Kora.

The annual series will kick-off Saturday April 6thwith a reading of 1987's cult classic and iconic film, The Princess Bride. The Princess Bride, a screenplay by William Goldman, will star RLTP Ensemble members Barry Williams, Kristen Tripp Kelley, Matt Witten, Anthony Alcocer, Lisa Vitrano, Jimmy Janowski, Bob Grabowski, Dave Mitchell and Doug Zschiegner alongside Cassie Cameron, Brian Mysliwy and Ben Moran. The Princess Bride will be directed by RLTP Artistic Director Scott Behrend and RLTP Ensemble member Katie Mallinson.
