National Black Theatre's Playwright Residency Deadline Extended

Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre (NBT) is now accepting application submissions for its I AM SOUL Playwright Residency Program. Due to the disruption to the artistic community caused by COVID-19, the deadline for submission has been extended to Monday, May 11, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. EST. To gain access to the application and learn more about the program, visit www.nationalblacktheatre.org. Inquiries about the application process should be directed to submit@nationalblacktheatre.org.

The Miranda Theatre Company Announces 3rd Annual Liz Smith Reading Series At The Cherry Lane Theatre

The Miranda Theatre Company's 3rd Annual Liz Smith Reading Series returns this March at the Cherry Lane Theatre. Named for the legendary journalist, theatre lover, and Miranda enthusiast (who would have turned 97 this February), the Liz Smith Reading Series is a celebration of Women's History Month showcasing work in development by Emma Gibson, Lindsay Joelle, Nambi E. Kelley (Native Son), Lisa Ramirez (To the Bone), and Lyra Yang.

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre, just celebrated its 2020 TCG Gala: Our Stories, last night, February 3, 2020, at The Edison Ballroom. The Gala honored North Carolina Black Repertory Company's National Black Theatre Festival, based in Winston-Salem; playwright David Henry Hwang; and TCG's arts advocacy at the federal level. The evening included performances from A Strange Loop and Soft Power, and feature Billy Bustamante, James Jackson, Jr., and Alyse Alan Louis.

National Black Theatre Has Announced Their Newest I AM SOUL Workshop Productions

Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre [NBT] announces the two workshop productions of its 51st Season 'SOUL Journey: NBT Beyond Walls': Bayano by Darrel Alejandro Holnes, directed by Jeffrey Page, and Retreat by Tracey Conyer Lee, directed by Zhailon Levingston, running March 11-15 and April 1-5 respectively.

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre, has shared the co-chair and host committee list of the 2020 TCG Gala: Our Stories, which will be held on Monday, February 3, 2020 at The Edison Ballroom, 240 W 47th St, New York, NY 10036. Leah Nanako Winkler has been awarded the 2018 Francesca Primus Prize for her play Two Mile Hollow. 2019 Tony winner Andre De Shields has been attending The National Black Theatre Festival® (NBTF) in Winston-Salem, N. C. since 1995. Dubbed the 'Black Theatre Holy Ground,' NBTF is the international outreach program of the North Carolina Black Repertory Company, founded by the late Larry Leon Hamlin in 1979. The Festival, also founded by Hamlin, has been held biennially since 1989. The NCBRC celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, while the NBTF celebrated its 30th.
