Bassin Performing Arts Center at York College - will present the second annual HEAR HER CALL CARIBBEAN-AMERICAN WOMEN'S THEATER FESTIVAL 2020 at MILTON G. BASSIN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER at YORK COLLEGE, 94-45 Guy R. Brewer Boulevard, Jamaica New York March 5-March 7, 2020. Showtimes: Thursday, March 5th & Friday, March 6th: 7:30pm; Saturday, March 7th: 11am-10pm. The festival is a celebration of the diverse viewpoints of Caribbean American female playwrights and filmmakers. DESSA ROSE By Ahrens And Flaherty Will Have a Concert Performance At Olney Theatre

Dessa Rose, the second installment of Olney Theatre Center's Applause Concert series bows for its single performance on Friday, March 6 at 8:00pm on the Mainstage. The musical, presented in a concert recital directed by Monique Midgette is a 2005 work by the famed duo Lynne Ahrens (Book and Lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (Music) based on the 1986 novel by Sherley Ann Williams. Christopher Youstra, Olney Theatre's Associate Artistic Director/Director of Music Theatre and the series curator serves as music director and conductor. Awa Sal Secka plays the title role, Gracie Jones co-stars as Ruth. Members of the cast of Miss You Like Hell fill-in the supporting roles. Limited tickets remain. GRANDMA'S QUILT Comes to Negro Ensemble At Theatre 80 St. Marks

In 'Grandma's Quilt' by Karen A. Brown, an elderly poor, unpretentious Black woman in rural Arkansas is sewing a quilt as the final act of her life. Each scrap of material is a prism into a chapter of her family's past. As she reflects on each period, she transforms into younger versions of herself to lead us through the history that she intends to pass on to her granddaughter. One actress portrays the old woman at six points in her life as well as the granddaughter. Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. will present the play's New York premiere March 11 to 21 at Theatre 80 St. Marks, 80 St. Marks Place. Two performers will share the unusual acting challenge of playing what is essentially seven characters: author Karen A. Brown from March 11 to 14 and actress Deidre Monique Benton from March 18 to 21. Director is Anthony Jay Hamilton.

HAVING OUR SAY tells the story of the Delany sisters, two sisters who were born to a former slave and grew up in the Jim Crow South. The Delany sisters both lived to be over 100 years old, and wrote their version of events in the 1993 biography that inspired the play. Lyric's production features two Broadway stars in the roles of Bessie and Sadie.

As a reviewer you generally find something wrong with a production no matter how much you enjoy it. Signature Theatre's latest World Premiere Musical Gun & Powder is a rare breed of show because it is literally a perfect theatrical experience. Under the fantastic direction of Robert O'Hara it features a superb cast, a compelling story, and possibly one of the best new scores of the season to be heard here or anywhere else.
