On Thursday, July 11, I had the pleasure of seeing the Connecticut debut of Molly Smith Metzler's emotionally intense dark comedy CRY IT OUT, as put on by Thrown Stone at the Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance in Ridgefield, CT.  Thrown Stone is yet again masterfully performing a production that immediately grips the attention of the audience, stimulates the mind, touches the emotions, and captivates us with the story line, drawing us right in, in such an intimate setting that it makes us feel as if we are eyewitnesses to actual events.

A winner of the ACTASteinberg Citation and the hit of the 2017 Humana Festival, Cry It Out is a hilarious, provocative, honest look at parenthood, class and the impossibility of "having it all."  Set in a part of Long Island where class lines and property lines bump up against each other, Cry It Out is the story of Jesse, a Manhattan lawyer trapped in the suburbs with her newborn, and her next-door neighbor Lina, a working class Long-Islander and college drop out. With nothing in common but baby bjorns, sleep deprivation, and nose fridas, they form a quick bond that reaches as far as their baby monitors will stretch. Cry It Out is directed by Molly Aaronson-Gelb, who directed Just Theater's hit productions of A Maze and We Are Proud to Present…

by Nancy Grossman - Apr 30, 2019

Merrimack Repertory Theatre concludes its 40th season with Molly Smith Metzler's CRY IT OUT, a delightful human comedy that surfs along on the waves of a burgeoning friendship between a pair of mothers of newborn babies, while also acknowledging the myriad challenges that lurk beneath the surface. The playwright examines some of the decisions faced by families when baby makes three, bringing up socioeconomic differences, stresses on the marriage, and debating child-rearing best practices. Over coffee in their adjoining backyards, the women help each other navigate the waters of their new realities and learn that modern day motherhood is no day at the beach.
