BWW Review: MARILYN HORNE SONG CELEBRATION at Zankel Hall Shows What Makes America Great

At last month's concert in Carnegie Hall, Joyce DiDonato was glorious musically but less-than-cheery philosophically--and that was before the guy in the White House started taking aim at arts and education funding. Taking the stage at Carnegie's Zankel Hall on Saturday, at THE MARILYN HORNE SONG CELEBRATION, Marilyn Horne was in a feistier frame of mind about the fight for our hearts, minds and souls--though she admittedly hadn't figured out a way for her personally to take on the battle . It seemed to me that the evening, with emerging singers and the great guest, was a pretty good way to get the ball rolling.

Summer Stages: No Rest for the Opera Crowd in the Northeast This Summer

Although the solstice doesn't officially appear for another week or so, the summer opera clock is already ticking. There's a plethora of performances going on all over New York City, in addition to interesting, entertaining and fascinating productions that are just a hop, skip and jump away. Among them: Lincoln Center's Lincoln Center Festival and Mostly Mozart and On Site Opera's West Village venue, to the more bucolic realms of Bard SummerScape in Dutchess County (NY) for Mascagni and Caramoor in Katonah (NY) for Rossini and Beethoven.

Music Academy of the West Posts Record Attendance, Revenue Totals in 2014

Santa Barbara, CA -- The Music Academy of the West has posted its highest attendance and revenue totals in its storied 67-year history, campus officials have announced. Sales revenue for the Music Academy's 2014 season, which concluded August 9, was up 3.5 percent over the previous year, while overall attendance grew to just shy of 35,500. Driving much of the gains were two sold-out performances of Carmen -- presented in honor of legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne's 80th birthday -- at Santa Barbara's Granada Theatre on August 1 and 3. The 2014 Summer Festival also saw the Music Academy net a record $459,000 for its full-scholarship program through its annual Cabaret gala fundraiser on August 7 at Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort.
