The Canadian Opera Company offers three bold new productions in 2019/2020 that hone in on the stories and myths that shape our perceptions and the ones that offer escape from all things ordinary. This 69th season features new productions of Puccini's Turandot, Dvo k's Rusalka, and Humperdinck's Hansel & Gretel, as well as COC revivals of Rossini's The Barber of Seville, Verdi's Aida, and Wagner's The Flying Dutchman.
R. Strauss' ELEKTRA Returns to Canadian Opera Company

Richard Strauss' twisted psychodrama, Elektra, returns to the COC stage with commanding star soprano Christine Goerke in the title role. Rooted in classic Greek tragedy, the one-act opera is an expressionist take on the ultimate tale of family dysfunction: Elektra's lust to avenge her father's murder at the hands of her mother and her mother's lover. Fury and obsession spiral into horrific consequence as Elektra careens down a path of total destruction, all set to an unrelenting modern score. Elektra runs for seven performances on January 26, 31, February 6, 10, 12, 16, 22, 2019.

The city's best all-access cultural programming returns this fall when the Canadian Opera Company's Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre kicks off its 13th season on September 25, 2018. Over 400 emerging and established artists, spanning a broad spectrum of artistic and cultural traditions, will perform in 72 concerts from September to May.

San Francisco's acclaimed Merola Opera Program, one of the most prestigious and selective opera training programs in the world, offers audiences a look at the opera stars of tomorrow with a lively, fully-staged production of The Rake's Progress. Based loosely on the eponymous eight paintings and engravings by William Hogarth (1733-1735), Stravinsky's dramatic opera follows the decline and fall of a profligate heir who makes a devil's bargain with Nick Shadow, abandoning life in the country and his tender fiancee for the wicked temptations of London.The Rake's Progress will be performed 7:30pm, Thursday, August 2 and 2:00pm, Saturday, August 4 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. On Monday, February 9 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, Carnegie Hall presents celebrated baritone Thomas Hampson in recital with pianist Wolfram Rieger in a program that features the world premiere of Civil Words by Jennifer Higdon, commissioned by Carnegie Hall. The program also includes works by Strauss, Hindemith, Vaughan Williams, Ives, and more. Please see below for full program details. Mr. Hampson, considered one of the most important interpreters of German Romantic song, has become known as the "Ambassador of American song" after his collaborative project with the Library of Congress called Song of America. Comprising more than 150 albums, Mr. Hampson's discography includes winners of a Grammy Award, five Edison Awards, and the Grand Prix du Disque. He was most recently featured on the album Christmas at Downton Abbey, released by Warner Bros. in November.
