For the opening of her third season as Artistic Director at Minneapolis' spunky Jungle Theater, Sarah Rasmussen and her team commissioned a new adaptation of LITTLE WOMEN from Kate Hamill in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the novel's publication. Kate Hamill is an actor who has, of late, gained notice for her skillful adaptations of classic novels for the stage (several Austen works, Vanity Fair, etc.), to the point that she was one of the 10 most frequently produced playwrights in the US last season. Berkeley Rep Sets Summer Residency Lab Projects

Today, The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep's Center for the Creation and Development of New Work announces that it has selected 18 projects for its fifth Summer Residency Lab featuring works from more than 30 talented artists. This June, as part of an extraordinary laboratory for collaboration, some of the nation's most prominent and promising writers, directors, designers, performers, and composers will unite at the Theatre's Harrison Street campus over an intense four-week period to share ideas, break bread, and create new plays. Dozens more local and out-of-town actors and directors will join the Summer Residency Lab, bringing the number of participating artists close to 100. (more...)

Just yesterday, President Barack Obama presented the National Medals of Arts in conjunction with the National Humanities Medals in an East Room ceremony at the White House. NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, 'Whether its animation or architecture, writing or music, these artists' creativity and passion have made an enormous impact on our nation. I join the President in congratulating them and celebrating the arts in our country.' The official citations for the 2013 National Medal of Arts recipients are: Julia Alvarez, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Joan Harris, Bill T. The American-Scandinavian Foundation is pleased to present Kathryn Roszak's San Francisco-based Danse Lumiere in the New York premiere of 'Secrets on the Way,' a dance noir inspired by the poetry of Swedish poet Tomas Transtromer, winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize, Monday April 7th at 8 PM at New York's Scandinavia House, 58 Park Avenue (between 37th & 38th Streets). A fusion of dance, theater and poetry, 'Secrets on the Way' was created and choreographed by Kathryn Roszak for six dancers and a narrator. Actor Earll Kingston will read several Transtromer poems in English translations by Robert Bly and May Swenson. (more...)
