Several years ago, I remember watching the Tony Awards and seeing Broadway power couple Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker presenting the award for Best Score and getting all giddy and nerdy over it because "NEW SONGS!" Well that's how I feel every summer at Village Theatre's Festival of New Musicals. I get to see what's out there up and coming and maybe get to walk away seeing a new gem. And this year was no exception with a couple of shows blowing me away. Now, of course, these are workshops and staged readings of shows, so we cannot really review them, but I can at least tell you what they offered us.
Great theater requires a willing suspension of disbelief. 'The Producers' by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan requires a willing embrace of 1940's Catskill schlock and shtick. That said, MTH's 'The Producers' is so much inspired silliness, so well performed, and so meticulously put together, it is tough to stop giggling and smirking and groaning at the awful, hysterical, politically in-correct, funny, one-liners. The Saturday night, Crown Center audience for 'The Producers' thoroughly embarrassed itself and was delighted to do so.

Muhlenberg Summer Theatre Program has been around as long as I can remember. Celebrating 38 years and going strong. It's been a good 15 years since I've been back and I'm kicking myself for it. Just over an hour from Philly tucked away in the suburban streets of Allentown makes for a beautiful day trip.

Judy Kuhn, Tony-nominated star of "Fun Home" and Broadway's original "Les Miz" and the voice of Disney's "Pocahontas" returns to P-Town on July 15 & 16 at 7:00 PM; Adam Pascal, star of the original Broadway cast of "Rent," as well as the film version lights up the Art House stage on July 17 at 6:00 PM; Christine Ebersole, the two-time Tony Award winning star of "Grey Gardens" and "War Paint" appears on July 19 & 20 at 6:00 PM; Will Swenson, Tony nominee for the revival of 'Hair' and most recently a star of the hit musical comedy "Disaster!," performs on July 28 & 29 at 7:00 PM.
