The January broadcasts of The New York Philharmonic This Week - the weekly radio series of concerts and recordings by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by Alec Baldwin - begin with an all-American New Year's Eve Concert conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert with Thomas Hampson as soloist. The program, recorded on New Year's Eve in 2009, includes Copland's Suite from Appalachian Spring and Old American Songs (selections), in addition to selections from Broadway musicals and Gershwin's An American in Paris. The following week, composer-conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the New York Concert Premiere of his Violin Concerto, featuring Leila Josefowicz as soloist, as well as Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, and Sibelius's Symphony No. 5.
Music Director Alan Gilbert will lead the New York Philharmonic on the ASIA / WINTER 2014 tour, February 6-19, 2014. The two-week tour - the Philharmonic's seventh international concert tour under Alan Gilbert's leadership - will feature ten concerts in three countries, with performances in Seoul, South Korea; Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo, and Yokohama, Japan; and Taipei, Taiwan.

This season's events will include discussions with Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow during his farewell season (TODAY, October 23); composer-conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and violinist Leila Josefowicz (October 28), who will discuss Mr. Salonen's Violin Concerto, written for Ms. Josefowicz (which they will perform with the Philharmonic in its New York Concert Premiere, October 30-November 5); Music Director Alan Gilbert and Executive Director Matthew VanBesien on the state of the Philharmonic (March 3, 2014); The Mary and James G. The New York Philharmonic will launch the tenth season of its concert broadcast series, The New York Philharmonic This Week, in September. Alec Baldwin returns for his fifth season as the host of the two-hour radio program, which is produced by the New York Philharmonic and syndicated both nationally and internationally 52 weeks a year by the WFMT Radio Network.
The New York Philharmonic is to be honored today with a 2012-13 ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, earning the Leonard Bernstein Award for Educational Programming, at the League of American Orchestras 68th National Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. The Philharmonic was selected for including in its 2012-13 season of educational programming works by contemporary composers Steven Stucky, Tristan Murail, Magnus Lindberg, and Wynton Marsalis as well as works by students from the Philharmonic's Credit Suisse Very Young Composers program.
The New York Philharmonic today releases a new album of World Premiere recordings of works by Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg. Released on Dacapo Records and distributed in the U.S. by the Naxos group, the album features works written for and performed by Music Director Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic during Mr. Lindberg's tenure as the Orchestra's MarieJosee Kravis Composer-in-Residence, 2009-12. The CD includes the live World Premiere performances of three New York Philharmonic commissions: EXPO, Al largo, and Piano Concerto No. 2 with pianist Yefim Bronfman, the last of which the New York Philharmonic co-commissioned with Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphony.
