Directors Lab West Steering Committee is pleased to announce the dates for the fifteenth annual Directors Lab West. The 2014 Lab will take place May 17-24th in residence at the Pasadena Playhouse. The Oregon Arts Commission (OAC) has awarded a $7,000 grant to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's (OSF) Cultural Connections program to support the development of Community Conversations, part of OSF's new engagement model with Latino communities in Portland and the Rogue Valley. Community Conversations is one of 26 arts-based projects in Oregon to receive a 2014 Arts Build Communities grant from the OAC.
Dallas Theater Center returns to the Studio Theatre for the first time since 2012 with Latino playwright Luis Alfaro's sizzling, sexy and startlingly contemporary play Oedipus el Rey, which features an all-Latino cast. DTC Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty will direct the play, an adaptation of Sophocles' timeless Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex and set in the vicious reality of today's L.A. barrios.Oedipus el Rey opens in previews tonight, January 16, 2014 with a Pay-What-You-Can performance and runs through March 2, 2014.

Intersection for the Arts and the California Shakespeare Theater come together this fall to co-produce the Califas Festival, a six week-long immersive, story-filled play yard of music, visual art, performance, and more in the area in and around Intersection's headquarters. The Festival is the culminating event of the Califas Project, a year of multimedia creative exploration in communities around the state including productions of Richard Montoya's The River at Campo Santo this past March, and American Night at Cal Shakes in June.
At the gala 45th Annual Equity Jeff Awards held at Drury Lane Oakbrook on Monday, November 4, Steppenwolf Theatre Company's 'Good People' received the award for Production-Play in a large tier theatre. Principal Actress Mariann Mayberry was also honored for her role in this David Lindsey-Abaire play, which considers the dangerous consequences of holding on to the past or leaving it behind. William Brown received Best Director of a play for Writers Theatre's production of the French farce 'The Liar', adapted by David Ives.

Noor Theatre's Highlight Reading Series continues this Monday at 7:30pm with an excerpt of The Shadow Spirit, by Ibn Daniyal. Written in Cairo in the 13th century, this saucy, satirical piece offers a raucous glimpse into medieval Cairo's underworld of pimps, prostitutes and dirty dealings. This is a rare opportunity to hear one of Egypt's earliest secular plays, which was written by a contemporary of Chaucer.

MainStreet Theatre Company has announced the first production of its 2013/2014 season, Aesop in Rancho Cucamonga, a world premiere play by Luis Alfaro and directed by Robert Castro. Now in its eighth season, MainStreet Theatre Company commissioned this adaptation of Aesop's Fables with a generous grant from the James Irvine Foundation. The production, which is also supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, will play two school performances on October 25 and open to the public on Saturday, October 26 at 4pm. The strictly limited engagement will run through Sunday, November 10 only.
