A new production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot will open at next year, directed by James Macdonald and starring Lucian Msamati (Estragon) and Ben Whishaw (Vladimir), with further casting to be announced. The production opens at Theatre Royal Haymarket in September 2024 and will play a strictly limited run.

This bold new film brings to life the remarkable backstage spaces of the National Theatre in which desire, dreams and destiny collide to make Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy sing in an entirely new way. Romeo and Juliet risk everything to be together.

The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize has announced 10 Finalists for its prestigious playwriting award, the oldest and largest international prize awarded to women+ playwrights.

The critically-acclaimed, award-winning drama became an international sensation in its first season, with its shocking yet artfully-choreographed action scenes and stunt work. Following the premiere, one episode of the eight-part season will debut Thursdays on AMC+, AMC Networks’ premium streaming bundle.

Donmar Warehouse Chair Adam Kenwright has announced four new members joining the Board of Trustees. Professor Hannah Thompson, Jonathan Kanagasooriam, Neil Blair and Sarah Carson join Adam Kenwright, Antonia Romeo, Gerard Lemos CMG, Jonathan Smith, June Sarpong OBE, Lucian Msamati, Susan Boster, Tessa Ross CBE, Tiina Lee and William Eccleshare on the Donmar's Board.

Adam Gillen will play King Henry VIII, returning to the Globe stage following his acclaimed performance of Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet in 2021. Adam’s other theatre credits include Killer Joe (starring Orlando Bloom) in 2018 for which he was Olivier nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of Amadeus, opposite Lucian Msamati. 

The filmed performance of Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches and of Part Two: Perestroika will be added to the National Theatre Collection 2 on Drama Online in February alongside eight new films announced in November.

The National Theatre has partnered with the Sir Peter Shaffer Charitable Foundation in committing to supporting playwrights with an initial two-year collaboration. Celebrating the life and career of Sir Peter Shaffer, this partnership will continue his desire to support playwrights as they create larger scale plays.

The film stars Josh O’Connor (The Crown, God’s Own Country) as Romeo and Jessie Buckley (Chernobyl, Judy) as Juliet, and will be available to screen across the UK and Ireland. 

Under Haydon's stewardship, the Rose's own work will be the priority, as demonstrated by the five Rose Originals in this upcoming season, but there will always be room on the theatre's stage for the country's leading touring shows as well.  This season's Rose Originals are a blend of new plays tackling significant contemporary issues and well-known titles reinvented for today.

The thing about Romeo and Juliet – but you know this, Grasshopper – is that it isn’t a love story – not at all, not even a little bit. It is rather a story of desperation, ego and self-regard. Juliet is a thirteen-year-old girl who has just been given the alarming news that she will be forced to marry a man she’s never met.

Golden Globe winner and star of 'The Crown Josh O'Connor and 'Fargo' star Jessie Buckley lead the original film for television by The National Theatre, Great Performances: Romeo & Juliet, which premieres tonight, Friday, April 23 at 9 p.m.
