Voices of Ascension announced its 37th season, The Radiant Depths, featuring programs spanning Renaissance masterworks to newly commissioned works, including a Nico Muhly commission written for organist James McVinnie.
Arts leader Jonathan Bradley has been named Executive Director of Voices of Ascension, the New York City-based professional chorus dedicated to sharing the transformative power of choral music through performances, commissions, and community engagement.
“After three years of uncertainty, cancellations, and shutdowns, Koerner Hall celebrates its 15th season filled with superstars from classical, jazz, pop, and global music, including debuts from over 20 artists ranging from the German pianist Igor Levit to Sona Jobarteh, the first female griot kora player from The Gambia. Two internationally acclaimed orchestras led by legendary Maestros sit comfortably alongside artists from 33 different countries. Two thirds of the concerts feature Canadians and a third of them feature artists that celebrate the great diversity of our city. Anonymous Man is Michael Gordon's first concert-length solo choral work. It was commissioned by The Crossing and written for the choir's 24 voices. Gordon merges subtle rhythmic invention with incredible power in his music, embodying, in the words of The New Yorker's Alex Ross, 'the fury of punk rock, the nervous brilliance of free jazz and the intransigence of classical modernism.'
After 46 years, the Vancouver Chamber Choir's founder and long-time conductor Jon Washburn is announcing his intent to step down as Artistic and Executive Director to become the professional choral ensemble's Conductor Emeritus. He will continue to lead the Choir through its 47th and 48th concert seasons (2017/18 and 2018/19) while the organization searches for his successor. Once that new person is designated he will assume his new role as Conductor Emeritus and principal guest conductor.
