The Encore Musical Theatre Company Presents The Tony Award-Winning Musical FUN HOME

Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Fun Home opens The Encore Musical Theatre Company's 12th season and will run Sept. 12-Oct. 13, 2019. Described as 'A Family Tragicomic,' Fun Home was written by cartoonist Alison Bechdel, best known for her long-running comic strip 'Dykes to Watch Out For.' Named the Best Book of 2006 by Time magazine, Fun Home was adapted into a musical by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori (Shrek, Violet, Thoroughly Modern Millie) and opened on Broadway in 2015 after a sold-out Off-Broadway run at the Public Theater in 2013.

Oregon Shakespeare Festival Announces 6 New Commissions For Acclaimed American Revolutions Cycle

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival today announced six new commissions as part of American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle, OSF's multi-decade program of commissioning and developing 37 new plays about moments of change in United States history. The commissioned artists are Zakiyyah Alexander, Jaclyn Backhaus, E. M. Lewis, Mary Katheryn Nagle, Sara Nović, and Sanaz Toossi.

In this highly anticipated musical, Alison Bechdel's coming-of-age memoir depicts the evolution of her young life, her identity, and the secrets that defined her family and her upbringing. The Academy of American Poets is pleased to announce that renowned graphic memoirist and comic book artist Alison Bechdel and former U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera will judge the 2020 National Poetry Month Poster Contest for Students. The winner of the contest will receive $500 and the winning artwork will be featured on the official April 2020 National Poetry Month poster, which the Academy will distribute to 100,000 libraries, schools, and bookstores nationwide during National Poetry Month. The winning student will also receive signed copies of books by this year's judges and be featured in American Poets magazine and on Poets.org, which reaches millions of readers each year.

On July 29, 2019, the Dramatists Guild of America, Inc. will hold its annual Awards Night in the Penthouse Lounge at the American Airlines Theater in New York City. Among the other honors given that night, an award from the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund will be presented to Svetlana Mintcheva, Director of Programing at the National Coalition Against Censorship for their fierce commitment to protecting and advocating the First Amendment.

It should come as no surprise that Fun Home, therefore, that the aforementioned Broadway hit featuring music by Jeanine Tesori, with book and lyrics by Lisa Kron based upon Bechdel's graphic novel, is one of my favorite works in the canon of contemporary American Musical Theater. What some readers might find surprising, however, is that I fell absolutely and deeply in love with the show once over, thanks to a production from, of all places, Murfreesboro Little Theatre, where the show completes its much-too-brief run today with its 2 p.m. matinee.

Studio Theatre rounds out its 2019-2020 season with the announcement of its Studio X productions-characteristically edgier, immersive offerings which include cult-favorite monologist Daniel Kitson with his latest project, Keep., and the Studio-commissioned world premiere of Abe Koogler's Aspen Ideas. Created with the support of Studio R&D, the theatre's incubator for new plays, Aspen Ideas probes the nature of ideas conceived by the wealthy and elite to solve the world's ills. Kitson famously made his DC debut at Studio Theatre in 2017, his first time outside of New York and a rare US engagement. He returns with a meditation on accumulation, material possessions, and the value we assign to them.
