CSO Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni opens the 2013-14 season by leading the Columbus Symphony Chorus, featured guest vocalists Dominique Labelle (soprano) and Sasha Cooke (mezzo-soprano), and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, including an off-stage brass ensemble echoing the last judgement from another world. This will also be the official debut of Jean-Sebastien Roy as the CSO's new concertmaster.

Licia Albanese is an Italian-born American operatic soprano. Noted especially for her portrayals of the lyric heroines of Verdi and Puccini, Albanese was a leading artist with the Metropolitan Opera of New York from 1940 to 1966. She also made many recordings and is chairman of The Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation which is dedicated to assisting young artists and singers. She celebrates her 100th birthday today and you can join in the celebration with the video below!

In the first public event of its 2013-14 season, the Metropolitan Opera Guild will pay tribute to one of the 20th century's great singing legends, Rise Stevens, who died in March at the age of 99, and whose centennial falls today, June 11. Hosted by Frederica von Stade, 'Rise: A Celebration of Rise Stevens' will take place in New York City's Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College on Wednesday, September 18, at 7:30pm.

American soprano Ailyn Perez earned yet another honor on Wednesday when she was named the winner of the 15th annual Placido Domingo Award. The prestigious award, personally given by Maestro Domingo to an artist of his choosing, celebrates the accomplishments of Hispanic artists as well as those who contribute to the awareness of opera and its educational value in the Latino community of Los Angeles. Earlier this year, Perez also won the namesake award of one of the other legendary tenors in opera's history - the 2012 Richard Tucker Award. Born in Chicago to Mexican parents, Perez is the first Hispanic singer to receive the Richard Tucker Award in its 34-year history.
