After a months-long series of competitions at the district, regional, and national levels, five young singers have been named the winners of the nation's most prestigious vocal competition, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

The heavenly beauty of Fauré's Requiem provides a soothing epilogue to Sibelius' thrilling call to freedom and Nielsen's stirring symphonic ode to optimism. The program will be conducted by former CSO Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni and feature guest soprano Hélène Brunet and guest baritone Anthony Clark Evans as well as the Columbus Symphony Chorus.

?On Sunday, January 11, Opera Index will present its 36th Distinguished Achievement Award to Susan Graham, one today's foremost opera stars, at its winter gala in the Grand Salon of the JW Marriott Essex House, 160 Central Park South, beginning at 6 p.m. with a reception at the Petit Salon. Presenting Ms. Graham with this year's award will be the revered American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, a previous Distinguished Achievement Award-winner.

Summer saw the passing of two of opera's most iconic figures: Licia Albanese, at the age of 105, and Carlo Bergonzi, at 90.

'Annual performances of Handel's Messiah have been a New York tradition from the time New York culture began to assert itself,' says Oratorio Society of New York Music Director Kent Tritle. Opera Exposures, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to presenting concerts and recitals featuring seasoned professional musicians and young operatic artists in accessible venues at affordable prices, will present a free Tribute Concert to Italian-born Soprano Licia Albanese on Sunday, October 19, 2014, at 3 PM at The Music Hall at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terrace, in Staten Island. Miss Albanese attended Opera Exposures' first recital during Black History Month in February 2004 at the Municipal Building in Manhattan.

San Francisco Opera today announced a cast change for the Company's current production of Vincenzo Bellini's Norma. American tenor Russell Thomas will sing the role of Pollione for the remaining five performances of the opera on September 14m, 19, 23, 27 and 30, 2014. Mr. Thomas replaces Italian tenor Marco Berti, who has withdrawn from the production for personal reasons.
